KDG unlocks private SD channels
March 28, 2013 10.23 Europe/London By Robert Briel

German cable operator will start distributing ten SD chanels from privarte broadcasters on April 3.

The move follows a verdict by the German monopoly commssion, the Bundeskartellamt, ordering the two big private broadcasting groups, RTL Deutschand and ProSiebenSat.1 to distribute their main SD channels unencrypted 0ver cable networks

KDG will not ony unlock RTL, RTL2, Super RTL, Vox, N-TV, ProSieben, Sat.1 and Kabel Eins, but also the sports channel Sport1 and RTL Nitro, a new male-skewed thematic channel from RTL.

Cable operators across Europe are now starting to distribute digital channels with encryption. UPC Netherlands announced the launch of 29 unencrypted digital channels on its network from April 3, while UPC Cablecom and UPC Austria have also started distributing digital SD channels without encoding some time ago.

In Germany, all cable operators have already been dustributing all public channels without encryption and are now forced to start distributing private channels as well, following the Bundeskartellamt ruling.
