ISRO Gives IITK Green Light to Launch Nano Satellite in 2009
May 20, 2009

The Indian Institute of Technology of Kanpur (IITK) has received approval from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to launch Jugnu, India’s lightest nano satellite, by the end of 2009, IITK announced May 19.
IITK secured the approval after the completion of a second design review. ISRO carried out the first review session of Jugnu in April.
Weighing only 3.5 kilograms, with dimensions of 34 cm by 10 cm wide, Jugnu will be equipped with micro imaging and micro electronic systems to transmit satellite images to its base station at the IITK campus. The imagery will be used for various applications such as drought monitoring, wasteland management, urban planning and flood-risk management, IITK said.
The satellite will be launched in the polar orbit from Sriharikota.
