GVF... Satellite Sector Threats (Summit)

The GVF Satellite Executive Summit entitled “Can Satellite and Terrestrial Wireless Co-Exist in C-band?” will be held on...

...Monday, March 18th, at the Intelsat DC Offices, located at 3400 International Dr. NW, Washington, DC, from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. This Executive Summit, organized by GVF, will address an issue of continued importance:

Do next-generation terrestrial-wireless interests pose a threat to the success of the satellite sector?
How safe is the sought-after satellite C-band from being re-allocated to terrestrial-wireless uses, and what other satellite spectrum bands may be at risk?
What efforts should the satellite industry take to ensure that satellite services are protected from harmful interference from new terrestrial services in the various satellite bands?

Throughout the world, fixed and mobile satellite services are being severely disrupted by interference from terrestrial wireless services in the “extended” and standard C-band frequencies. Further, there is an effort underway by the terrestrial-wireless industry to propose sharing of satellite services, which is opposed by the GVF Regulatory Working Group—at C-, Ku-, Ka- and V-band in national regulatory proceedings in every major region of the world.

Such wireless-industry efforts, if successful, would lead to a significant loss in revenue for the satellite industry, and constitute a severe blow to the user community that has come to depend upon satellite services in the affected bands. Further, experiences of the satellite industry during WRC-07 underscore the need for a more comprehensive campaign to assure continued access not only to C-band, but to all satellite spectrum, including L-, X-, Ku-, Ka-, and V-bands.

To address these challenges, GVF has revived and is escalating activities of the Satellite Spectrum Initiative (www.satellite-spectrum-initiative.com), which was originally formed in preparation for WRC-07. This global Satellite Spectrum Campaign is leading and co-ordinating efforts of the regional associations, as well as national-level allies that GVF works with in Brazil, Mexico, Australia, Indonesia, India, Bangladesh, China, Russia, U.A.E., and the U.S., among others. User groups, like broadcasters, military, the UN, civil aviation and other allied organizations are also being engaged at an unprecedented level to ensure that regulators from around the world understand the critical services that are being provided by satellite technology; and support protection of these services at the next World Radioconference in 2015.
