German local channel Köln.tv closes down

February 24, 2016 13.23 Europe/London By Jörn Krieger

German media company DuMont Rheinland will close down its Cologne-based local TV channel Köln.tv on 31 March, 2016.

The reason for the move is the lack of economic perspective, the company said in a statement, adding that insufficient income from the local advertising market and high structural distribution costs due to the cable carriage had an enduringly negative effect on revenues.

The licence will be handed back to local media authority LfM. 30 employees from the editorial and production department are affected by the closure. The apprentices will be offered positions within the DuMont media group.

“The local advertising partners have not accepted Köln.tv and its offerings,” said Johannes Müller, managing director of Köln.tv. “I’m very sorry for our young team which has excellently developed the programmes.”

Köln.tv launched on January 5 2015 as a successor of center.tv. The channel is available in analogue and digital on the cable networks of Unitymedia and NetCologne in Cologne and surroundings, nationwide on Deutsche Telekom’s IPTV platform Entertain and as a livestream on the internet.
