Gamer sets new Asteroids high-score record

A US man spent 58 consecutive hours playing the arcade game classic Asteroids, to beat a 28-year-old high score record.

John McAllister, 41, from Oregon scored a massive 41,338,740 points during the game on a original arcade machine in his mate's basement.

Because the 1979 game can't be paused, John was unable to sleep during the marathon gaming session and even had to build up enough extra lives to allow him to go to the loo.

But after 58 hours he achieved his aim, with tired eyes he beat the previous high score of 41,336,440 which was set back in 1982 by a 15-year-old called Scott Safran.

Luckily the previous record holder is now 37-years-old and probably doesn't care too much about losing his title.
