The Federal Trade Commission said two companies that were telemarketing DISH Network programming have agreed to pay a total of $95,000 for violating the National Do Not Call Registry.
The orders, filed by the Justice Department on the FTC's behalf, also bar the defendants, Planet Earth Satellite and Star Satellite, from violating the commission's telemarketing rules when calling consumers.
The complaint against Planet Earth alleged that the company violated those telemarketing rules by calling consumers with phone numbers that are on the DNC (do not call) registry.
The complaint against Star Satellite alleged that the defendants violated "do not call" provisions within telemarketing sales rules by abandoning outbound telemarketing calls to consumers. Specifically, the company failed to connect a call to a live telemarketer within two seconds after a consumer answers, the commission said. Also, the FTC complaint against Star Satellite alleged that the company and additional defendants "were unjustly enriched to the extent that they received funds from unlawful practices."
The FTC order requires Planet Earth to pay $20,000 as a civil penalty. The order against Star Satellite totaled $75,000, an amount assessed given the company's inability to pay a higher penalty, the FTC said in a statement.
