Liverpool 1-3 Aston Villa: Villans Bounce Back With Anfield Win
A thrilling game at Anfield saw the visitors answer their critics with a fine win whilst handing the Reds a rare home defeat.

Liverpool 1-3 Aston Villa
Premier League Standings/Results

Aston Villa traveled to Anfield with questions being asked about Martin O’Neill’s men who had managed only two wins in their last 18 games and were soundly beaten on their last visit to Liverpool.

Indeed another defeat looked in the offing in the early stages with the home side beginning the game at full throttle and almost snatching the lead within the opening thirty seconds.

A twisting run by Fernando Torres finished with the Spaniard chipping the ball into the box to Yossi Benayoun but the Israeli couldn’t direct his header on target and the ball bounced just wide.

Yet Liverpool continued to roar forwards and with ten minutes on the clock the Villa goal led a charmed life.

Firstly Torres wriggled into the box but slipped, however the ball fell to Steven Gerrard who somehow poked it back to the Spaniard but his shot was blocked.

Yet again the ball came back to Gerrard and he had two chances to score but with bodies flying into the box somehow the ball stayed out and the visitors escaped.

The skipper almost made amends minutes later after picking up a pass from Dirk Kuyt outside the box and attempting a trademark shot first time that whistled over the bar.

Whilst the hosts were clearly on top, Villa were defending with real vigor and looking full of determination and with just over half an hour gone they shocked Anfield into stunned silence.

An Ashley Young free kick was whipped into the box and found the head of Lucas who headed past Pepe Reina to hand the visitors the lead. The Reds attempted to rouse themselves with Glen Johnson bursting forwards and feeding Torres but his shot was well saved by Brad Friedel.

Anfield expected more but Rafael Benitez’s mere were toiling ensuring Villa had half-chances of their own through Nigel Reo-Coker and Nicky Shorey.

With half-time looming and the Reds looking increasingly frustrated, Villa bagged a second goal in added time at the end of the first half.

A well-flighted corner in by Shorey found Curtis Davies at the near post in between Jamie Carragher and Torres and he headed home to hand Villa a two goal lead at the break.

Rafael Benitez sent his side out early for the second half and the Reds had a great chance to pull a goal back straight from the restart.

Unsurprisingly it was Gerrard picking up a pass from Johnson and turning and stinging Friedel’s fingers inside the box before Javier Mascherano on the follow up struck his shot straight at the American.

Urged on by the crowd and attacking the Kop the Reds piled on the pressure, Kuyt going close with a header which Friedel was forced to tip over before Shorey cleared another header from the Dutchman off the line.

Yet Villa continued to pose problems on the break and within seconds of Kuyt’s chance Villa almost added a third with a sliding Reo-Coker inches away from touching Gabriel's Agbonlahor’s cross past Reina.

At the back Martin O’Neill’s men remained firm as the shots continued to rain in on Friedel’s goal and with 20 minutes to go the pressure finally told.

A burst down the left by Emiliano Insua saw the full back cross to Torres at the far post and he stabbed home on the volley to hand Anfield hope.

Yet their joy was short lived as within minutes of the goal Gerrard had fouled Reo-Coker in the box leaving the referee no option but to point straight to the spot.

Up stepped Ashley Young who calmly slotted his penalty low into the corner, sending Reina the wrong way, to restore the visitors’ two goal lead.

Back Liverpool came again and although they had chances a resilient Villa held firm for a much-needed victory that will do much to answer their doubters whilst handing the Reds a few of their own.

Roman Rule: Wide Open Plains
The Italian Serie A kicked off with its first matchday of the season. Goal.com's Zac Lee Rigg sees open plains for teams to race through as the season approaches.

The battle for the Italian peninsula has acres of wide open plain to exploit. If the opening matchday of the season said anything, it's that this league is wide open.

“We want to reach the Champions League, and we believe that we are capable of achieving that,” Palermo Edinson Cavani told Corriere dello Sport, but it could have been anyone from Napoli, Roma, Genoa, Fiorentina, Udinese, and even Milan.

Perhaps the two most well-known clubs in the hunt for fourth place, Roma and Fiorentina, dropped points in the first run out. The Roman club lost an end-to-end thriller with Genoa 3-2 and Fiorentina looked lethargic and short of ideas until an Adrian Mutu wonder-strike salvaged a point against Bologna. Any of a host of teams will be looking to be galloping in the Champions League chariot next season.

It's not as if the top teams will distance themselves by much either. Juventus ceded the midfield in the second half against Chievo and ground out a narrow 1-0 win thanks to Diego's first addition to the attack. The Brazilian won and subsequently delivered a free kick that Vincenzo Iaquinta headed home for the game winner. Milan found traditional relegation struggler Siena had its troops disciplined and organized. The team labored for a win, which is more than can be said about city neighbors Inter, who dropped points to recently-promoted Bari.

Fans of the bigger clubs in Italy could be in for a hand-wringing season as their clubs look set to get flanked on the open plains.

Julius Cesar

Someone crown Fabio Cannavaro consul for this week. He's maligned for perhaps unjustly winning the Ballon d'Or in 2006 and ducking out of Juventus after Calciopoli in the same year. But with more performances like the concrete one he gave to preserve Juve's slender lead against Chievo and he'll soon be forgiven all by the Juventus Ultras.

“It was just one game, but so impressed was the Stadio Olimpico that the few whistles at the beginning of the match turned into rapturous cheers every time Cannavaro touched the ball from around the 30-minute mark,” noted Goal.com's Carlo Garganese.

Cicero

Jose Mourinho suggested before the weekend's matches that Luciano Spaletti should “think about doing better” with his Roma squad and Lazio owner Claudio Lotito lost it on television, but the weekend's wordsmith proved to be Antonio Cassano. Much has been made of the magician's inability to crack into Marcelo Lippi's Italy side, despite blistering form for Sampdoria and a lack of episodes that plagued the bad boy in years past. When asked about it, Cassano perhaps didn't do all he could for the cleanly-scrubbed image he is going for.

"Lippi is the coach, and he has to decide. I will always give my availability for selection, but I cannot hold a gun to his head," Cassano told Sky Sport Italia.

Cleopatra

The Egyptian queen was centuries ahead of her time with her slim beauty, but this week she was played by a tubby Brazilian. During the match against Siena, Ronaldinho provided a handful of gorgeous moments. Weighed down by immobility and that dreadful ponytail, most of them were moments of illuminating vision to pick out the runs of teammates in behind a stiff defensive line. Two of those through balls led to goals for Pato. But it was an audacious overhead kick in the 68th minute that most effectively stole the breath from one's breast. As a corner came in, Ronaldinho turned and launched a well-controlled volley over his head which was blazing toward the goal until Siena goalkeeper Gianluca Curci tipped it over the bar.

Special mention must go to Marek Hamski's laser that briefly equalized the Napoli - Palermo match.

Brutus

Last year Pablo Osvaldo scored the goal to earn an automatic Champions League slot for Fiorentina. Now, after being shipped out of Florence, the striker has moved to Bologna and squared off against his old teammates in the first game of the season. Midway through the first half, a corner swished through the hair of Stevan Jovetic to let Osvaldo duck in and power a commanding header past Sebastien Frey for the game's opener. In a move displaying his class, Osvaldo refused to celebrate, raising a hand in recognition instead. As the game progressed, the 23-year-old continued to trouble the Fiorentina defense with his power and determination. Poor finishing prevented him from killing off his old club, but the defenders he used to train with won't soon be forgetting the display he put on against them.

Results: Bologna 1-1 Fiorentina, Siena 1-2 Milan, Inter 1-1 Bari, Catania 1-2 Sampdoria, Genoa 3-2 Roma, Juventus 1-0 Chievo, Lazio 1-0 Atlanta, Livorno 0-0 Cagliari, Palermo 2-1 Napoli, Udinese 2-2 Parma

Jornada 5 Recap: Clasicos Live Up To The Hype
The 5th Jornada in the Mexican Apertura saw a jam packed Saturday. Out of the nine games played this weekend seven were played on Saturday including two Clasicos. The Clasicos didn’t disappoint but unfortunately for some, disappointments still made up a good part of the Jornada.

Weekend Results:

Estudiantes 3-0 Pumas
Gallos Blancos 2-2 Jaguares
Cruz Azul 2-3 America
Indios 1-1 San Luis
Pachuca 1-2 Puebla
Tigres 1-2 Monterrey
Atlas 0-2 Morelia
Atlante 3-1 Chivas
Toluca 3-0 Santos

Cruz Azul, Who’s Your Daddy?

America is that’s who. That is how the Mexican media has interpreted America’s dominance over Cruz Azul. Cruz Azul has not tasted victory against last Aguilas in the last 15 games. Las Aguilas have shown an impressive form in the last weeks and a positive outcome for Cruz Azul looked very bleak. Cruz Azul kept it close until Daniel Marquez entered the field and won the game for America. Both America and Cruz Azul encounter tough opponents for the next Jornada. Cruz Azul will visit Superliders Morelia while America will play host to Toluca.

Monterrey Broke the Streak

The second Clasico that was played on Saturday was the one between Tigres and Monterrey. Unlike Cruz Azul, which could not break the streak, Monterrey broke a 13 game streak where they had not won in the Universitario. Monterrey beat out their city rivals by 2-1. Los Rayados had a clear edge over Tigres. Tigres goalkeeper Cirilo Saucedo did a great job between the goal and even got help from his own posts. Monterrey hit the post twice and Humberto Suazo missed a penalty thanks to those nagging posts.

Atlante Back on Track?

It’s been a long time since Atlante has shown any real potential in the Mexican league. They’ve kept a pretty much solid defense but they have been lacking the fire power. It was a different story on Saturday as Atlante beat out Las Chivas by a score of 3-1.

Christian Bermudez | In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit.

But would that justify a come back for the team that will represent Concacaf in the Club World Cup? I don’t think so. This win wasn’t much of a surprise considering that the goats have never won in Cancun against Atlante. Atlante will have a pretty easy schedule as their next three opponents are Gallos Blancos, Jaguares and Pumas, who in between the three have a combined 2 wins which only come courtesy of Jaguares. Chivas on the other hand still had some problems in the back and will have to face a struggling Pachuca in the next Jornada.

Pachuca On The Decline

The team that could well be the team of the decade in Mexico seems to be on the decline. The team that won international recognition as the heavy hitter in the Concacaf region lost a lot of prestige in this one week alone. Pachuca suffered their second consecutive loss at the hands of Puebla this Saturday. An even bigger upset came on Wednesday when Los Tuzos were blown away by the virtually unknown team Arabe Unido. The season is still young though and Pachuca have the pieces to turn it around but they have to start doing it before it’s too late.

Quotes of the Weak

Sergio Bernal | Has age finally caught up?

1. “They are dangerous players, they have a lot of mobility. We need to be on our heels and I hope I can do things well so they don’t make any goals. We will go all out like we always do, try to score and no let them make anything,” said Pumas keeper Sergio Bernal days before being creamed by Estudiantes.

2. “We know why it is because we knew how things went down. We are calm though because when a sick person recognizes they are sick they eventually get better. We need to keep working with an elevated self esteem and with greater concentration. We need to focus on the two words that described last season which are order and pride. That is how we will come out ahead,” admitted Indios coach Hector Eugui.

3. “ We suffered to get here. We want to stay here and we have to give 110 percent in order to do so. When you can’t play you got to give it some heart, we all have that here. We can still do it and we need to demonstrate it. We have two vital games left at home and I think the story will change,” Gallos Blancos Margarito Gonzalez said earlier this week.

4. “The result was a bad one. I think we need to play the game with the same attitude from start to finish. We are always fighting against the current because of our own errors. We are the ones who go into the field and we are the ones committing errors,” said Ramon Morales after their loss in Cancun.

5. “ Everything is going smoothly for the most part. I hope both sides can finally come to terms with everything that is still needed to discuss. I think the final hurdle now will be the medical exams,” said Giancarlo Maldonado in his farewell to Atlante.

Side Notes:

* Morelia , Puebla only two teams who are undefeated.

* Pumas, Indios, and Gallos Blancos have not seen a single win in the Apertura

* The aerosol spray, used to indicate where the defensive wall should stand in a free kick, was put into use for the first time in the Mexican league (don’t worry it’s environmentally safe)

* America's last three game winning streak came in the Clausura 2007 when they made it to the final.

In the hot seat:

1. Ricardo Ferretti – Pumas have kept their winless record at five and have only managed to score one goal in the season.

2. Hector Eugui – The Indios boss worked miracles last season but the magic has run out as Indios are still in search of their first win.

3. Guillermo Rivarola – The loosing trend does not fit well with much famed Pachuca institute. Rivarola must win and must win fast.

4. Francisco Ramirez – The Chivas manager is yet to impress and it won’t be long till Jorge Vergara pulls the plug.

5. Hector Medrano – The Gallos Blancos will want to stay in the Mexican top flight and firing Medrano could be for the best.

Destined 8:

Moises Muñoz | Pound your chest if you're the best.

1. Morelia – The Monarcas are still unbeaten in the Apertura but only hold a one point lead in the Superlider race.

2. Toluca – The devils beat out Santos on Sunday in convincing fashion, knowing that ending the season in the first spot will boost their chances in the Liguilla.

3. Monterrey - Los Rayados ended a horrible streak in the Universitario against Tigres. Monterrey had a chance to put the game way out of reach but failed to convert on many occasions.

4.America – Las Aguilas are riding a 3 game wining streak but that streak will be put to the test when they host Toluca in the next Jornada.

5. Estudiantes – Estudiantes climbed up as leader of group three after they defeated Pumas.

6. Tigres – Has great weapons and they will flourish with time.

7. Santos – Suffered a defeat but will bounce back against weaker teams

8. Atlas - Daniel Osorno has shown to be a vital part in Atlas, all that is left is a true striker to emerge.

Team of the week: Toluca

Toluca placed themselves with in striking distance of the Superlider spot. Los Diablos showed that what happened last week was not going to repeat as they took down Santos 3-0.

Player of the week: Bruno Marioni

Bruno Marioni scored a hat trick against the team who brought him to Mexico, Pumas. With his hat trick he helped his team reach the top spot in group three.

Anelka Talks Up Drogba Partnership At Chelsea
The Frenchman believes that his partnership with the Ivorian can be bountiful.

EPL: Nicolas Anelka, Fulham v Chelsea (PA)
Nicolas Anelka and Didier Drogba were in formidable form when Chelsea fought Fulham at the weekend, highlighted by their combination play that produced the decisive second goal, and the former Real Madrid and Arsenal ace has - like Drogba before him - lauded the partnership.
“Me and Didier want to play together and we are just happy to be on the pitch together,” Anelka explained in The London Paper.

“I want him to score and he wants me to score. I think we showed that against Fulham. When I get the ball I try and look for him, and when he’s got the ball he tries to look for me, so it’s easier to score goals like that.

“The more time we spend on the pitch playing together then the understanding gets better, and I think we will score more goals.”

Anelka then further stated that he would prefer victory in Europe over domestic glory.

“For me and for all the boys, it’s the Champions League first.

“Also the [Premier] League, but everyone wants to win the Champions League as it’s really important for us, and for the fans and the chairman as well. So number one is the Champions League, and then the League.”

Anelka has led a long and journeyed career, but insisted that he now feels settled.

“I want to be here. I like to play with big players and I like to try and win everything. I would be pleased to sign [a contract] for many years.”

Kenny Cooper Scores Only Goal In TSV 1860 Munich Defeat
Cooper got on the scoresheet again, but 1860 Munich was overcome, 3-1, by Karlsruhe.

American striker Kenny Cooper continued to show well for his German club, 1860 Munich, scoring the team's only goal in a 3-1 defeat to Karlsruhe.

The former FC Dallas player scored the opening goal in the match. In the 17th minute, Cooper picked up the ball about 40 yards out, drove forward, cut back and hit a low right-footed shot from the edge of the arc into the lower left corner of the goal.

Anton Fink was able to equalize for Karlsruhe, and then came the play that 1860 coach Ewald Lienen later called "the crux of the game".

1860 Munich forward Benny Lauth earned a penalty kick, but missed it when he hit the ball off the crossbar.

Lauth had a match to forget, as Cooper, who continued to play well, served in a nice cross in the 48th minute. Another 1860 player in the box flicked the ball on to Lauth, but his header missed the open goal.

Though Karlsruhe scored twice more to finish off the scoring, Cooper's goal is likely to keep him earning more regular starts, which bodes well for his USA national team future.

Pellegrini: Cristiano Ronaldo Needs More Time
The Portuguese star is expected to be ready for the start of the Primera Division campaign.

Real Madrid coach Manuel Pellegrini has told AS that Cristiano Ronaldo has not fully adapted to playing for Real Madrid, but he isn't far off.

"In pre-season there has been a lot of hard work and Cristiano has had to cope with many changes - a new country, a new league - and that takes time to adapt. I think he'll be in good form for the start of La Liga," said the Chilean.

On the whole, the gaffer has been impressed with his team in pre-season and feels things have taken shape the way he would like.

"The team has done well in pre-season and we will have many options to make a first eleven. We will look to have possession, create chances and win, that is what fans want to see," he remarked.

The former Villarreal coach is also refusing to set any long-term objectives for his new-look Madrid side, claiming that three points in the season opener away to Deportivo La Coruna is the objective for now.

"Setting a long-term goal would be unwise. We need to start with three points against Depor and show week by week that we are prepared," added Pellegrini.

Johan Cruyff Criticizes Real Madrid Spending Policy
Bringing in big name players doesn't show football knowledge, claims the Dutch legend.

Johan Cruyff has hit out at Real Madrid's summer spending policy and suggested that the influx of new stars at Madrid will prove an ideal motivation for Barcelona, according to AS.

The former Barca player and coach said that Madrid president Florentino Perez knew more about business than football.

"He understands a lot about business but signing the best players doesn't mean you know football," said Cruyff.

He also suggested that Cristiano Ronaldo has it all to do to prove himself at the Bernabeu, saying Ronaldo hadn't "started" at Madrid yet.

"At Manchester [United], Ronaldo was a player who had everything. [Lionel] Messi is a great player with style, and part of a team [at Barcelona]. We need to see now if Cristiano will be this to Madrid," added Cruyff.

Interestingly, Cruyff also revealed that during his days as an Ajax player a move was made to sell him to Real Madrid, an opportunity he refused on principle.

"I did not like that this was done behind my back so I didn't go," he said, before adding that Madrid legend Alfredo di Stefano was his idol during his youth.

Benitez Unimpressed By Liverpool Mistakes Against Aston Villa
It's two defeats in three Premier League games for Rafael Benitez's Reds.

EPL: Steven Gerrard, Liverpool - Aston Villa (PA)
Liverpool succumbed to a 3-1 loss at Anfield on Monday evening when a flurry of costly errors were capitalized on by Aston Villa.

A Lucas Leiva own goal, coupled with a Curtis Davies header and an Ashley Young penalty saw the tie swing in Martin O'Neill's men's favor, and Fernando Torres' strike to bring the tie to 2-1 was insufficient to spark the comeback that Rafael Benitez craved.

Following the final whistle, the Spaniard was swift to seek an exit down the Liverpool tunnel, but spoke to ESPN where he talked of the "mistakes" his side conceded.

"It was a frustrating night, we started well and we had chances. We had one mistake and at the last minute of the half we had another one. Then another mistake, [that] they scored [from].

"When we scored our goal, at 1-2, everything could have been different. We had another mistake and another two [goals to chase].

"I was 100 per cent sure we could turn it round, but it was the right moment for them to have the penalty," he shared.

Liverpool were second-best in the first-half, but Benitez revealed that he was pleased with the second-half reaction.

"I thought we improved in the second half. We were working harder, playing better, the goalkeeper played well, but we showed character."

Liverpool's two losses in three games equals the number of defeats they accrued throughout the entirety of the 2008-09 Premier League season, but Benitez refused to get drawn into campaign comparisons.

"It's a different season. Things can change."

O’Neill Delighted With Aston Villa’s ‘Fantastic’ Win Over Liverpool
The Villa boss was all smiles after a stunning win at Anfield.

EPL: Ashley Young, Liverpool - Aston Villa (PA)

Aston Villa manager Martin O’Neill admitted he was delighted with his side after watching them beat Liverpool at Anfield this evening.

The Midlanders triumphed 3-1 in a thrilling game on Merseyside as they picked up their first win of the season.

Speaking to ESPN after the game, the Villa boss hailed a tremendous display from his side.

“I’m delighted with the performance I couldn’t be more pleased,” he said.

“I thought they put absolutely everything into the game not just in terms of effort, but in terms of skill, in terms of ability.

“To come and win here today against maybe one of the three Championship favorites was a terrific effort by all the team.”

An own goal by Lucas and a header by Curtis Davies handed the visitors a two goal lead before Fernando Torres grabbed Liverpool a lifeline.

Ashley Young then sealed the win with a penalty and the Villa boss explained how the game had ebbed and flowed.

“At 2-0 we seemed in reasonable command of the game although you are never in command of any game at Anfield,” explained the Irishman.

“It goes to 2-1 with the crowd urging them on and so we had to react pretty quickly and we got a goal through a penalty, and it was a penalty and we got ourselves back in it. Got a bit of shape, bit of discipline and deserved to win.”

Goalkeeper Brad Friedel was named man of the match and the Villa boss insisted it was fully deserved.

“Brad Friedel just threw back the years again, I thought he was fantastic,” he added.

“This was great for him to come back to Anfield and play like that here. He’ll be delighted and we are obviously delighted with him.”

The victory is only Villa’s third in their last 19 games and O’Neill felt it was fully deserved.

“I thought we played very very strongly,” he said before concluding, “Overall it was a fantastic performance.”

LIVERPOOL

Reina: 6.0 - Looked to get Liverpool going forward with quick throws. Booked for kicking the ball away.

Johnson: 6.5 - When he came forwards he posed Villa real problems but but his forwards bursts were few and far between.

Carragher: 6 - A good block on Sidwell early on but couldn't prevent Davies heading home the second. Tried to join the attack late on.

Skrtel: 6.5 - Enjoyed his tussle with Agbonlahor and looked strong. Booked for a late cynical challenge on the striker.

Insua: 6.5 - Rarely crossed the halfway line until the closing stages but then did to great effect by setting up Torres for his goal.

Mascherano: 6.5 - Was one of Liverpool's better performers on a poor night for the Reds, although constantly looked on the verge of losing his temper.

Lucas: 5 - Headed home the opener for Villa and that just about summed up his night.

Kuyt: 6 - A quiet first half but improved after the break. Had two good chances with headers, one off the line, hit the side netting but just couldn't find the target.

Gerrard: 5 - Has scored more goals against Villa than any other team but not tonight. Had plenty of chances but couldn't find a way past Friedel and conceded the penalty just when his team had got back in it.

Benayoun: 5 - Couldn't direct an early header on target and struggled to provide the creativity that Liverpool so badly needed.

Torres: 6.5 - Grabbed a goal with a good finish but could have had more. Missed a late header which he might have done better with.

Voronin: 6 - Involved in the goal.

Milner: 7 - Worked incredibly hard, was happy to help out his defense as well as being alive to quick breaks.

Alessandro Del Piero Targets Roma Game For Return
The Italian international had to miss out on the first game of the season due to some physical problems, but is hoping to be ready for this weekend's high-profile match.

Del Piero, Juventus (Peace Cup)
Juventus forward Alessandro Del Piero is targeting a return for this Sunday's big game against Roma at the Olimpico Stadium after missing out on the first match of the season against Chievo Verona.

The Bianconeri defeated the Flying Donkeys 1-0 at home and will be trying to make it two in a row against the Giallorossi, with the veteran attacker's possible presence being a huge morale-boost for the squad in this game.

"We're very happy to have started this new season with a win," declared the Old Lady's captain on his website, alessandrodelpiero.com.

"It was a tough and suffered game, but in the end it brought us the three points. No game for me due to the inflammation, but I hope to be available already from the away game in Rome on Sunday."

This is the 35-year-old's 16th season with Juventus, where he has played a total of 433 Serie A games, scoring 188 goals for his team, helping them win five league titles and a Champions League.

Amauri: My Italian Passport Is On The Way
The ex-Rosanero may soon be at the disposal of Azzurri boss Marcello Lippi.

Juventus striker Amauri is pleased with his side's winning start to the 2009-10 campaign, as they narrowly defeated Chievo on Sunday afternoon by a 1-0 scoreline.

"There are still some things to improve, but we are working on this. I am personally happy with my seasonal debut: I'm fine physically and worked well during the summer, I hope to continue like this," he was quoted as saying by La Repubblica.

Meanwhile, the Brazilian-born hitman could soon potentially suit up for the Italian national team, as he claims his passport is due to arrive in the near future.

"It's coming, I hope to have it this week," he explained. "This is the last document needed to finish the bureaucratic process to obtain my Italian passport."

Amauri joined Juventus from Palermo in the summer of 2008, in a cash plus player exchange deal. He scored 12 league goals in his inaugural season in Turin.

AC Milan Boss Leonardo 'Optimistic' Regarding Ronaldinho & Beckham
The Brazilian tactician discussed the two high-profile stars.

Leonardo - Milan (Grazia Neri)
AC Milan coach Leonardo is confident that star playmaker Ronaldinho can return to his best at San Siro. The player endured a difficult first season at the club, but looked in excellent form during this season's opening match win against Siena.

"I know him very well. Last year he was not able to give his best, but this year he can improve," he told Spanish magazine Don Balon.

He's an incredibly talented player, one of the best in the world. I am optimistic about his future at Milan."

Meanwhile, the future of David Beckham remains unresolved, as he seems certain to play to Europe in January, with a return to the Rossoneri a potential option for the World Cup hopeful.

"His experience in Milan was positive, both for him and for us. It was a real friendship," he suggested.

"Now David is back at the Los Angeles Galaxy, we will see what happens in the future, anything is possible."

Zola: West Ham Won't Chase Lucas Neill
The Hammers boss seems to have lost patience with the Australian.

Lucas Neill's future looks as uncertain as ever, as West Ham United manager Gianfranco Zola has today affirmed that signing the Australian international on a new deal was far from the forefront of his mind at the moment.

The defender's contract at Upton Park expired in the summer, and he had seemed set to leave east London, with reports circulating that both Sunderland and Turkish giants Galatasaray were interested in him.

However, there is further speculation floating around that he could be tempted to re-join the Irons on a new contract, but Zola today indicated that the uncertainty of the situation had pushed the player far down his list of priorities.

"He was in talks with West Ham, then I find out he was in talks with Galatasaray and with Sunderland. Now I don't know what's going on," the Sardinian told Sky Sports.
"But he's out, and that's no good for him. For the moment, he's not our priority in that position."

OFFICIAL: Sylvinho Joins Manchester City On Year-Long Deal
The Brazilian is now a Citizen...

Manchester City have today officially confirmed the signing of veteran Brazilian left-back Sylvinho on a one-year contract. The 35-year-old joins after his contract with Spanish champions Barcelona expired at the end of last season.

City manager Mark Hughes was delighted to welcome the defender to the club today, telling the club's official website, "Sylvinho has a wealth of experience at the very top level, having represented Brazil and played for some of the very top clubs in Europe.

"When the chance presented itself to bring him to Manchester City as a free agent I saw it as representing excellent business for us. Sylvinho won the European Cup last season at Barcelona and he will strengthen our defensive options."

The Brazilian has extensive Premier League experience, having played 55 times for Arsenal between 1999 and 2001. He has also won six caps for his country, and has collected three La Liga titles in a career which has also seen him play for Celta Vigo and Corinthians.

He will wear the number 16 shirt at Eastlands.

Fulham Recruit Damien Duff: Newcastle United Relegation Left Me 'Suicidal'
The Cottagers' summer signing is delighted to be at a "well run football club", hinting that life with the Magpies was tough.

EPL: Damien Duff, Aston Villa - Newcastle United (PA)
Fulham's £4 million winger Damien Duff, recently imported from Newcastle United, has spoken out over how the Magpies' drop from the Premier League into the Championship left him "suicidal", before indicating that he was overjoyed to have joined a "well run club".

The 30-year-old is eager to re-establish his career at Craven Cottage. Duff's formidable threat from the wide areas at former club Blackburn Rovers saw him enjoy a high-profile transfer to Chelsea in 2003, but his spell at Newcastle United, whom he joined in 2006, has seen him fall from grace.

The Republic of Ireland international, therefore, is "grateful" for the opportunity to flourish under new boss Roy Hodgson.

"I was feeling suicidal about the way we went down at Newcastle and wasn't even thinking that far ahead," Duff explained to The People.

"It's really exciting, from where I have come from, to come to a well-run football club and a team where everyone enjoys their job," he further stated.

"When this opportunity came I jumped at the chance. Roy Hodgson is a top manager," he concluded.

Report: Milan To Swap Oddo For West Ham United's Faubert
Milan are looking towards the Hammers defender, who could arrive in a swap deal for Oddo.

Julien Faubert, Real Madrid (PA)
Milan are ready to open up some dialogue with West Ham United that could see Massimo Oddo swap places with Julien Faubert.

According to Sportmediaset.it, West Ham are keen on Oddo, who has been tipped with an exit from the San Siro.

The Italian doesn't seem to be a part of Leonardo's plans, and he is behind Gianluca Zambrotta and Luca Antonini in the pecking order for the right-sided slot.

An exchange deal with West Ham seems the solution. Voices claim Milan are keen on Faubert and a straight-swap with no co-ownership clauses is the solution.

Faubert spent half of last season on loan at Real Madrid where he made little impact before returning to east London.

The move depends on Oddo's will to leave though. He wants to fight for his place, and he recently turned down the chance to go back to his former club Lazio. Unless the Italian leaves, Faubert is unlikely to arrive.

Chelsea 3-0 Burnley: Blues Cruise At Stamford Bridge
Despite an inspired performance by the Clarets ‘keeper, the home side made it four wins out of four.

Chelsea 3-0 Burnley - Lineups/Stats
Premier League Fixtures, Results

Nine months after departing Stamford Bridge with a famous League Cup win, Burnley returned to Chelsea hoping for a similar result but this time in the Premier League.

Indeed after beating champions Manchester United and Everton, Owen Coyle’s men were full of confidence as they took on the west Londoners.

However, the first half was a one-sided affair with the home side dominating the play yet being frustrated for long periods due to an inspired performance from Clarets’ stopper Brian Jensen.

It took only three minutes for Carlo Ancelotti’s men to go close, Nicolas Anelka finding himself free, cut inside and unleashed a shot on his weaker foot that Jensen saved calmly.

Less than a minute later and the Frenchman went even closer. A twisting, turning run by Michael Ballack saw the German cross to Anelka at the far post and the striker was inches away from heading home unmarked.

Still the chances came, a mistake by Alexander allowed Anelka a one-on-one with Jensen but a heavy touch at a crucial moment by the striker allowed the Dane to pounce on the ball.

Ballack was next, cruising into the box with a clever turn that left Bikey on the turf. With just Jensen to beat the German attempted a dink but the goalkeeper did brilliantly to block.

The veteran was at it again minutes later when a corner found Terry in the box and he showed a great first touch before poking a shot goalwards which flew straight at Jensen.

Incredibly, Terry then turned provider, heading a glorious ball from Michael Essien to Frank Lampard but his shot at point blank range was straight at the stopper.

Yet for all their pressure the two best chances of the half surely fell to the visitors who could easily have opened the scoring.

With only seven minutes on the clock McCann was allowed to slice through the Chelsea half, unimpeded yet his shot was too high and sailed harmlessly over the bar.

Martin Paterson was to have an even better chance, after some sloppy defending allowed Mears to race through on goal.

He then squared a pass for his striker to finish but instead he sliced his shot narrowly wide with the goal gaping.

Just as it looked as though Burnley would survive until the break, Chelsea finally scored in stoppage time at the end of the first half.

Drogba raced onto a through ball from Essien down the right wing, before firing in a low cross for Anelka to tap home at the far post for a deserved lead.

The home side picked up where they had left off at the beginning of the second half and within minutes of the restart they had doubled their lead.

A poor clearance fell only to Anelka on the left wing, he slipped a ball to Lampard and the midfielder chipped in a lovely cross for a diving Ballack to head past Jensen.

Chelsea were now rampant and went on to grab a third with a little over 50 minutes on the clock.

Another flowing move saw Ashley Cole play a one-two with Lampard, before picking up the return and firing a superb shot past Jensen and into the far corner.

With a comfortable lead established the home side slipped into cruise control but still the chances came, although Jensen ensured the score line did not become a humiliation.

Acrobatic stops denied both Essien and Ballack whilst Mears had to be alert to scoop a shot off the line by substitute Saloman Kalou late on as the Clarets wilted in the London sunshine.

For Chelsea, meanwhile, it was sweet revenge for last season whilst another win and another clean sheet means their perfect start to the season continues.

Prem Preview: Wolverhampton Wanderers - Hull City
Two relegation candidates meet in a vital early season contest at Molineux on Saturday.

Kick-Off: Saturday, August 29, 15:00 (local time). Molineux, Wolverhampton.

Wolverhampton Wanderers and Hull City were both amongst the relegation favorites at the start of the Premier League season and three games in that situation is yet to change.

Both have got off the mark with wins over Wigan Athletic and Bolton Wanderers respectively, but two defeats apiece mean they already sit in the bottom half of the Premier League table.

It is usually said that survival is decided upon the results you get against teams likely to be around you in the league table, and that sentiment rings true when it comes to the meeting of these two outfits.

Wolves need to develop a good home record - similar to that of Stoke City last year - as the key to their survival bid, while Hull just need to go on a consistent run of positive results after tailing off badly at the end of last season.

There isn’t too much between these two sides and tensions should be high on Saturday.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Wolves – Kevin Doyle

Wolves are banking on Kevin Doyle scoring the goals to keep them in the Premier League this season after his summer move from Reading. Injury has hindered his settling in spell at Molineux, but he is now fully fit and will want to open his goal-scoring account against Hull.

Hull – Jozy Altidore

After making a real impact with an assist on his Premier League debut and a Carling Cup goal in midweek, USA striker Jozy Altidore is already becoming a fan favorite for the Tigers. He will be eager to build on his good start with a first Premier League goal on Saturday.

FORM GUIDE

Wolves

Aug 25 Wolves 0-0 Swindon [Won on penalties] (Carling Cup)
Aug 22 Manchester City 1-0 Wolves (Premier League)
Aug 18 Wigan 0-1 Wolves (Premier League)
Aug 15 Wolves 0-2 West Ham United (Premier League)

Hull City

Aug 25 Hull City 3-1 Southend (Carling Cup)
Aug 22 Hull City 1-0 Bolton Wanderers (Premier League)
Aug 19 Hull City 1-5 Tottenham Hotspur (Premier League)
Aug 15 Chelsea 2-1 Hull City (Premier League)

TEAM NEWS

Wolves

Sylvan Ebanks-Blake is a major doubt with a hamstring injury for Wolves, while fellow striker Chris Iwelumo is also out.

The versatile Greg Halford does return, though, and Kevin Doyle (groin) is now fully fit to play.

Possible Starting XI (4-4-2): Hennessey, Stearman, Craddock, Mancienne, Stephen Ward; Henry, Halford, Edwards, Milijas; Doyle, Keogh.

Hull City

Midfielders Dean Marney, Jimmy Bullard and Ian Ashbee are all still out for Hull, but manager Phil Brown does not have any fresh injury concerns.

Possible Starting XI (4-4-2): Myhill, Zayatte, Turner, Gardner, Dawson; Kilbane, Olofinjana, Boateng, Hunt; Ghilas, Altidore.

PREDICTION

Wolves need to make Molineux a fortress if they are to survive in the Premier League this season and a home game with Hull City provides them with the perfect chance to get started on that front.

Hull have some decent players but last week’s win was their first for 12 games and there is still a shortage of confidence from the Tigers.

This game really could go either way, but I think home advantage will prove decisive for Wolves.

Wolves 1–0 Hull City

Donovan: No Move Until The End Of The Year
“It's nice to feel wanted,” admitted Landon Donovan of the interest shown in him by PSG, but the American won't be moving in the current transfer window.

Landon Donovan
CARSON, Calif.--Landon Donovan won't be moving to the French Ligue 1 with Paris-Saint Germain, or any other league for that matter, in the dwindling days of the summer transfer window. Rumors had circulated that PSG was interested in the American attacker, but Donovan brushed aside notions that he would be moving to the French capital in the upcoming days.

“There was some interest, but nothing, if anything, would happen until the end of the year,” Donovan told the assorted press after training with the Los Angeles Galaxy Friday. “I'm not thinking about it.”

The Galaxy has seven games left in a playoff hunt it looks increasingly likely to win. Donovan spent last winter on loan with Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga during the Major League Soccer offseason. Any future move seems confined to the winter transfer window as well.

Previously this summer, Italian Serie A club Livorno was linked with a move for Donovan, as well as national teammate Ricardo Clark.

“It's nice to feel wanted,” Donovan said. “We all want to feel wanted, right?”

Unfortunately for the 27-year-old's European ambitions, MLS is one of the entities that wants America's marquee attacking player. His contract is set to expire at the end of this year, but the league can exercise a clause that will lengthen his current deal by two years.

The current window closes on August 31, two days after Donovan and the Galaxy take on Chivas USA in the Honda SuperClasico.
