Calcio Debate: Inter Still The Team To Beat, Milan Need New Players
Inter thrashed Milan 4-0 in the Derby di Milano. Carlo Garganese offers his views on the game.

Jose Mourinho said it best in the aftermath of his side’s shock opening day draw against Bari last week when he mockingly predicted that, in the week’s build-up to the Derby della Madonnina, the Italian media would present Milan as “the best team” and Inter as “the team without any possibility”.

Things didn’t exactly play out that way in the press, but one did feel that there was a ridiculous false sense of enthusiasm surrounding the Rossoneri. As I wrote in Monday’s Calcio Debate, Milan had struggled to beat a Siena side that had lost four of their five best players from last season in Houssine Kharja, Daniele Portanova, Juan Zuniga and Daniele Galloppa, a Siena side who are many people’s favourites to finish bottom of Serie A this season.

The acid test for Milan was always going to be last night’s clash against their city cousins, and the difference in quantity and quality in every department of the pitch was staggering.

For almost half-an-hour, Milan held their own and were perhaps even the better side – Pato, Ronaldinho and Marco Borriello all threatening to score – but as soon as Inter took the lead, somewhat against the run of play, Leonardo’s men capitulated spectacularly.

For the first time since the days of perhaps Ronaldo and Youri Djorkaeff, Inter actually played some entertaining football. The one-touch interchange that led to Thiago Motta’s opener and Maicon’s third goal was Barcelona-esque.

Which brings us on nicely to Zlatan Ibrahimovic – will the forward’s summer move to the Blaugrana see Inter improve as a pass-and-move team now there is no option of just humping direct balls forward to the Super Swede? On last night’s evidence – with summer signings Lucio, Thiago Motta, Diego Milito (who scored the second from the penalty spot and created two) and Samuel Eto’o all impressing, and newest purchase Wesley Sneijder enduring a sound start – things do look good.

Milito scored one and made two

Captain Javier Zanetti has described his troops as “the most complete Inter squad ever” (better than Giacinto Facchetti’s Grande Inter?) - let’s not get too carried away. Just like Milan should not have been judged after Siena, Inter should not really be judged after Milan. The Rossoneri are a team with real problems – even a struggling Bayern Munich thrashed them 4-1 in pre-season – and they are weak in numerous areas of the pitch.

The midfield is too slow, static and inflexible. Both full-backs, particularly Marek Jankulovski on the left, are vulnerable – the Czech was crucified by the relentless Maicon. Meanwhile, Rino Gattuso and Ronaldinho – who were once arguably the best in the world in their respective roles – no longer seem to have the legs to cope with powerful machines like Inter. Gattuso’s disastrous conceding of a penalty before then receiving a second yellow card on 40 minutes, just seconds before he was due to be substituted, ended any hope Milan had of a comeback.

Gattuso's hacks down Sneijder for his red card

What is worse is that, barring the injured Christian Abbiati and new signing Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, who strangely made his debut as a substitute with the immobile, irrelevant Borriello preferred, Milan had their strongest XI out. A few injuries in the weaker areas and Leonardo is suddenly facing the prospect of selecting the likes of Massimo Oddo and Giuseppe Favalli. With 15 of the first team over the age of 30, one worries how the Rossoneri will juggle Serie A with Champions League twice a week.

Inter are still the team to beat in the Scudetto race. Only Juventus can stop them, and we will get a better idea of just how strong the Bianconeri are when they travel to Roma this evening. As for Milan, they need signings before the transfer window closes, or else the failure to finish in the top four, as many people predicted before the start of the season, is a real possibility.

Report: Manchester City Reject Barcelona Approach For Robinho

Manchester City have rejected a €40m offer from Barcelona for Brazilian star Robinho, according to reports from Spain.

Marca suggests that the Spanish giants wanted to add the former Real Madrid forward in a transfer-deadline deal, to complete their squad for the season ahead.

However, the English club dismissed the Blaugrana’s advances, despite their substantial offer.

The Catalan club, who yesterday confirmed the signing of Shakhtar Donetsk defender Dmitro Chygrynskiy, saw Robinho as the final piece of the puzzle as they attempt to defend their trio of titles in 2009/10.

It is thought that the offer was initially considered by both Mark Hughes and the club’s owners, but after discussions between all parties it was decided that Robinho was a key player in the revolution at Eastlands.

Robinho joined City from Real Madrid almost a year ago to the day in a £32.5m deal, but with the huge influx of talent signed by Hughes this summer, the 25-year old may not see as much first-team action as he enjoyed last season.

Italy coach Marcello Lippi has named his squad to play Georgia and Bulgaria in World Cup qualifying Group 8, and there was a shock call-up for Fiorentina winger Marco Marchionni, while Antonio Cassano was again snubbed.

The Azzurri travel to Tbilisi to play Georgia on September 5 before hosting Bulgaria at Turin's Stadio Olimpico four days later.

There were not too many changes from the squad who drew 0-0 in a friendly with Switzerland earlier this month. Youngsters Domenico Criscito and Claudio Marchisio keep their places, while Nicola Legrottaglie replaces injured Genoa defender Salvatore Bocchetti.

Daniele De Rossi returns in midfield, while there is a surprise call for the aforementioned Marchionni, who this summer left Juventus for Fiorentina as part of the Felipe Melo deal.

The attack is unchanged from the Switzerland outing, meaning Antonio Cassano is out of luck, as is Juventus' Alessandro Del Piero. Amauri is expected to be drafted into the squad in time for the October qualifiers against Republic of Ireland and Cyprus.

Goalkeepers: Gigi Buffon (Juventus), Morgan De Sanctis (Napoli), Federico Marchetti (Cagliari).

Defenders: Fabio Cannavaro (Juventus), Giorgio Chiellini (Juventus), Domenico Criscito (Genoa), Fabio Grosso (Lione), Nicola Legrottaglie (Juventus), Davide Santon (Inter), Gianluca Zambrotta (Milan).

Midfielders: Mauro German Camoranesi (Juventus), Gaetano D'Agostino (Udinese), Daniele De Rossi (Roma), Marco Marchionni (Fiorentina), Claudio Marchisio (Juventus), Angelo Palombo (Sampdoria), Simone Pepe (Udinese), Andrea Pirlo (Milan).

Attackers: Antonio Di Natale (Udinese), Alberto Gilardino (Fiorentina), Vincenzo Iaquinta (Juventus), Fabio Quagliarella (Napoli), Giuseppe Rossi (Villarreal).

United States international Eddie Johnson is looking to work his way quickly into manager Roy Hodgson's plans after returning to Fulham.

Johnson spent part of last season on loan at Cardiff City where he became acclimated to the physical nature of English football.

Now that he has become used to the English playing style and has a successful pre-season behind him, Johnson feels the time is right to flourish at Craven Cottage.

He told the Daily Star Sunday, "I want to show Fulham fans that I am here to score goals and play an important role.
"Pre-season went really well for me. The manager told me that he signed me for a reason and that I have everything that he is looking for.

"It's just a matter of me putting those aspects into practice. My nine months at Cardiff City gave me the chance to get used to English football. It has opened my eyes to another style of football."

Johnson will be hoping to match the success of fellow countryman Clint Dempsey who has become a regular first team player at Fulham.

Speaking for the first time since being diagnosed with a broken leg, Tottenham Hotspur playmaker Luka Modric is devastated by his latest injury setback.

Injured yesterday against Birmingham City in a tackle with Lee Bowyer, Modric hoped he had only hurt his calf until an X-Ray confirmed he has indeed fractured his right fibula.

Modric is set for a long spell on the sidelines and knew how serious his injury was straight away.

Modric told Croatian daily Jutarnji List, ""It's like my whole world has crumbled because I will be out for at least six weeks.

"I am terribly sad. It wasn't a ferocious tackle, but it hurt badly and I knew something was wrong the moment it happened.
"The worst feeling is knowing that I will be watching both my club and country from the sidelines for a while."

Modric will also miss crucial World Cup qualifiers for Crotia against the likes of England and Belarus.

Argentina coach Diego Maradona has been banned from football for two months by Fifa for his furious outburst after last month's victory over Uruguay.
Maradona, under pressure in the run-up to the match, directed an expletive-laden tirade, broadcast on live TV, at reporters and critics after the game.
The 1-0 win ensured Argentina qualified for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
The ban will run from 15 November to 15 January 2010, which means he will miss the World Cup draw on 4 December.
He could also miss a home international friendly against the Czech Republic scheduled for 16 December at a so-far unspecified venue, though his role as coach at the World Cup will not be affected.
Maradona, who attended the three-hour disciplinary committee hearing in Zurich, was also fined £15,000.

In a statement, Fifa said they had taken into consideration the "sincere remorse" shown by the Argentina head coach, who had flown from Madrid to Zurich after Argentina's 2-1 friendly loss to Spain on Saturday.
But football's governing body warned that a repetition of a similar incident would result in stronger sanctions being imposed in the future.
Fifa had the authority to ban Maradona until after the World Cup quarter-finals, but the 49-year-old was deemed to have breached Article 57 relating to "offensive gestures or language" rather than Article 58, which carries a mandatory five-match stadium ban.
Following Maradona's outburst, Fifa president Sepp Blatter said there was "no alternative" but to ask the governing body's disciplinary committee to open a case.
Maradona, who as a player helped Argentina win the 1986 World Cup, had been under pressure in the build-up to the Uruguay match.
Defeats against Bolivia, Ecuador, Brazil and Paraguay had seriously undermined Argentina's attempts to qualify for South Africa.
Critics questioned Maradona's team selection, with 70 players called up for duty in 14 matches.
And his 13-month tenure has been marked by clashes with players, coaches, journalists and directors.
Less than a week after he took over from Alfio Basile, who resigned in October 2008, there was speculation Maradona would quit following the Argentina Football Association's (AFA) refusal to appoint former captain Oscar Ruggeri as assistant coach.
And influential playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme retired from the international scene, announcing he and the head coach did not live by "the same codes".
Maradona also upset 1986 World Cup-winning coach Carlos Bilardo.
It was envisaged that Bilardo, the AFA's technical director of national teams, would offer support to the inexperienced coach, but Maradona instead said the veteran should "stay up in the directors' box in suit and tie".
As a player, Maradona produced a series of stellar displays to guide Argentina to victory in the 1986 World Cup and then helped them reach the final, which they lost to Germany, four years later.
But his time as coach has included a 6-1 defeat in Bolivia and a 3-1 home loss to Brazil.
Going into the final two qualifying matches, a poll showed that the majority of Argentina fans thought Maradona was unfit to coach the national team.
But Argentina won both games to book their ticket to South Africa.
