Fibre# optic broadband importance stressed by# businessman

Friday, November 19th

Cumbrian# residents have been urged to campaign for fibre broadband to be rolled out in the area.
Lack of access to fibre optic broadband will leave people feeling like "second-class citizens#".

South Cumbrian businessman Nick Chaloner claimed it is vital for residents in the area to vote in the BT Race to Infinity initiative, as failure to do so will result in the region lagging behind other parts of the UK in terms of internet access.

Speaking to the North# West Evening #Mail, Mr #Chaloner said he is backing the BT campaign, in which the telecoms giant will roll out super-fast broadband to the five exchanges with the greatest demand for the technology.

"Having# access to the fastest broadband will make a huge difference," he remarked.

And the campaigner warned: "If Furness is not included in super-fast broadband we will be second-class citizens."

BT# has previously stated it will deploy fibre broadband to two-thirds of properties across the country by 2014, a goal that it says will require an investment of up to £2.#5 billion.
