Eutelsat unifies satellite names
by Jason Saundalkar on Mar 11, 2012

French satellite provider Eutelsat has unified the names of its satellites under the Eutelsat brand name. The company’s satellites will now take the company brand name followed by the relevant figure for their orbital position and a letter highlighting their order of arrival at that position.

Under the new naming convention satellite W6 at 21.5-degrees East is now called EUTELSAT 21A, and the future W6A satellite becomes EUTELSAT 21B. To ensure clarity satellites at Eutelsat’s four West positions include West in their name. For example Atlantic Bird 2 has become EUTELSAT 8 West A.

The change took place on March 1 and the company says it has made the switch for a number of reasons, which include; creating a closer association with the Eutelsat name and its satellites, to remove contradictions within the current fleet naming system which has progressively mixed figures loosely related to an industrial series with figures related to an orbital position, to enable Eutelsat and the external community to identify immediately where a satellite is located - a key metric in the business, and to raise Eutelsat corporate awareness.

Eutelsat will, however, be retaining the HOT BIRD AND KA-SAT brands, which means that HOT BIRD 6 (for example) has now become EUTELSAT HOT BIRD 13A.
