England has been named as the least patriotic nation in Europe, with many people scared to fly the St. George's cross.

A survey quizzed almost 6,000 residents across Europe about their feelings towards their respective country.

Various rating of patriotism where then compared, including things like knowledge of the national day, patron saints and pride in the national flag.

It was found that English had the lowest score for patriotism with just 5.8 out of 10, while Scots came in at 7.1, the Welsh at 7.06 and the Irish at 6.72.

Over all the Dutch emerged as the most patriotic European country at 7.18… but then again, if we had cannabis-serving cafes we might be proud too.
It was found that just one in three English people knew when St George's Day was and more than forty per cent were clueless as to why he is the patron saint.

Many also said they would be scared to fly the flag for fear of being branded racist and one in six fear they will be told to take it down.

Stephen Garnett, editor of This England magazine, which commissioned the study, said: "We're incredibly disappointed that English people are afraid of displaying the St George's Cross on our patron saint's day.

"We want to reclaim the flag from extremists by asking as many people as possible, no matter what background they come from, to fly it."
