Egypt denies broadcasting pro-Gaddafi TV on Nilesat

The Egyptian Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) has denied reports that Egypt’s Nilesat satellite network was broadcasting Jamahiriya, Libya’s state channel. On its official Facebook page, it said Egypt was working hard to maintain good relations with Libya’s revolutionaries and “would not assist any party working against Libya’s best interests.”

Abdullah Naker, commander of Tripoli’s Revolution Council, warned on Saturday that the council would forcibly close the Egyptian Embassy and the Libyan-Egyptian border if SCAF leaders did not stop broadcasting the channel, which continues to air footage of Qadhafi’s past speeches. Naker said that last week that Nilesat allowed broadcasts of Libya’s state channel Jamahiriya, which is loyal to Muammar Gaddafi.

Although the channel’s signal transmission did not appear on Saturday, residents in Tripoli said they saw a channel with the Jamahiriya name and logo airing on Friday.

State-owned Middle East News Agency (MENA) quoted a source from Nilesat as saying Libya’s state channel Jamahiriya was broadcast from a European satellite and that Nilesat would not broadcast any channel supporting the former Libyan regime. The source added that Nilesat only broadcasts channels approved by the Libya’s Transitional National Council.
