There is no official purpose, when the 800s first came out there was speculation about it been used for programming but it just a bog stock usb port. I use it to power a internal fan.

is it power-OFF when the box is in standby?
I know the external USB is allways ON so it's not practical to poewer an external fan.

No it is always powered you can wire a fan to the scart though and that will power down in standby.

Could this usb socket also be used to connect a usb pen.. just to install plug-ins to.. ??

Worth a try mate, not tried it personally as it powers my fan.

I did wonder i while ago about a dvbt stick in there with a socket on the back of the 800 but space as you know is tight in there with a fan and hdd.

You can also connect the fan to the 5 V mini fan connector at the main board, it goes in standby :)

Revision L M-tuner purchased the box last december, i did cut off the wires from the mini fan, connect those to green+ and white- from a usb cable.
Usb goes into the cooling pad which is placed on top of the box and the little white fan connector into the mainboard.
To get the cable out of the box without drilling any holes,i did remove the sata connector and the 56k modem.

So now when the box is powered on the fans are on to and when in standby fans are off also.
There is no need to get standby from the scart on pin8.
Not all clones having this standby on the mini fan conn. i guess only newer ones.

There is not much noise due the 5V but there's cool enough (the pad has 2 fans).
