In what is still a small market shared by ten large pay-TV operators, DirecTV has become the undisputed leader in Ecuador. With 35% of subscriptions in the country, both for its pre-paid and invoiced services, the direct-to-home (DTH) platform has attracted nearly 400,000 subs.

According to figures presented by Supertel, Ecuador's telecom authority, the public operator CNT-TV is in second place, with a 20% market share and 216,000 subs, demonstrating the fastest growth among the country's operators by adding 200,000 clients in two years.

Claro TV is also growing fast, though it barely reaches 15,000 subs. The America Movil platform started operating in the country at the end of last year and has taken 1% of a very competitive market.

The other players are showing quite stable figures, with Sistema TV Cable-Quito gathering 7% of the market and 75,000 subs in spite of only operating in the country's capital district. The same trend is observed with Satelcom which operates in the Guayaquil city where it has a strong presence with over 65,000 subs and 6% of the national market.

In order of size, the rest of Ecuador's larger operators are Cableunion, also operating in Quito area, TV Net, Univisa, Puerto Cable and Satelcom Cuencua.

In a market which has lately broken the one-million subscriber barrier, there are still 20% of subscriptions owned by many small and local operators.
