Curtain for MSN TV
July 8, 2013 22.08 Europe/London By Julian Clover

Microsoft is bringing to an end its MSN TV service after 17 years. Initially launched as WebTV, the service will go dark on September 30, 2013, according to a company web post, and subscriber emails sent to subscribers.

Customers are being advised to ensure they have a Microsoft account, enabling the safe passage of photos and emails that may have been stored on the service.

“The web has continued to evolve at a breathtaking pace, and there are many new ways to access the internet. Accordingly, we have made the difficult decision to end the MSN TV service,” said Microsoft.

It is thought that the new Xbox One will go a long way towards replacing the set-top in the Microsoft product portfolio.

The company has also recently abandoned its TV middleware business following the sale of Mediaroom to Ericsson.

The initial product and service was developed by WebTV Network before being purchased by Microsoft Corporation and incorporated into MSN.
