CSA sets rules for Canal+ FTA
September 19, 2012 08.38 Europe/London By Robert Briel

The French media authority CSA has set the rules for Canal+”s acquisition of the two free-to-air channel Direct 8 and Direct Star.

The Canal+ Group is in the process of buying the two digital terrestrial broadcasters from the groupe Bolloré. Other FTA channels have already requested to put the acquisition under strict rules as they fear increased competition from the powerful Canal+ group.

CSA has now ruled that D8 (the new name for Direct 8) may only broadcast FTA on average one single TV series produced by a major US studio during the next three years. The regulator can extend this period up to five years.

D8 also had to broadcast at least 720 hours of newly produced French language programming. D8 may only broadcast original French programming from the main Canal+ channel after an eighteen month window.

D8 also has to invest in French audiovisual productions and is obliged to expand the range of sports covered on television.

With regards to Direct Star, which will be renamed into D17, the CSA said that it must offer a wide variety of musical genres.
