CI Plus passes 100 million mark
07.05 Europe/London, September 10, 2011 By Julian Clover

IBC 2011 – AMSTERDAM. The CI Plus common interface technology reached 100 million CI Plus device certificates as at September 1, CI Plus LLP has announced.

The organisation said that with 60 million certificates issued in the calendar year 2010 alone, it could be assumed that the CI Plus security mechanisms are now incorporated in most of the TV sets sold in Europe.

“We are delighted to have realised these volumes so quickly which must surely indicate that CI Plus has become a de-facto standard in the European TV Market. CI Plus LLP is looking forward to continued growth in use of the system by broadcasters and operators and future enhancements that will result from the DVB Project’s activity to develop and further enhance the CI Plus Specification.”

The technology has been licensed by more than 92 companies, indicating its broad acceptance.

CI Plus was launched in January 2009. It was developed out of DVB-CI, which had been created to deliver conditional access systems as an add-on module through the standard interface to a digital television receiver, without the need for the conditional access to be embedded in the receiver itself.

It has found favour with operators that include KabelKiosk, Sky Deutschland, Ziggo, UPC and Com Hem.
