A British tourist has saved a toddler from possible grave injury after the child fell from a fourth-floor hotel balcony.

According to Reuters, the 16-month-old Jah-Nea Myles had slipped through the railing of the balcony in Florida. Seeing the toddler dangling from the edge, Helen Beard, 44, rushed underneath and caught her when she fell.

The child's 20-year-old mother, Helena Myles, said afterwards: "I'm thanking the Lord above right now for saving my child's life. I'm also thanking that lady because she was an angel sent from heaven."

Beard, from Worksop, looked after the toddler until paramedics took the child to hospital.

Helena claimed that her friend had been watching Jah-Nea and added: "[Jah-Nea] is perfectly fine. Not a scratch on her body."

The AP also reported that Heard was rewarded with the Orange County Sheriff Office's Medal of Merit.

Speaking of the incident, which happened just after 11pm last Wednesday, she admitted: "It was a very surreal event.

"Luckily, I had my flat shoes on, and I managed to run over and catch her as she lost her grip. It all happened so quickly. And I just sat with her and tried to calm her down."

In addition, Heard revealed she hasn't spoken to the young girl's parents since the fall.
