The Brazilian government has moved a step closer to manufacturing what would be its first ever geostationary orbit satellite.
Last week, the country's minister of communications, Paulo Bernardo, confirmed that the final draft containing the technical proposal for the satellite launch has now been finalised.
Based on the budget prepared by the federal government and sent to Congress last month in the shape of the Pluriannual Plan, the aircraft would cost 716 million Reais (US$387 million) to build.
The text of the project will be submitted to President Dilma Rousseff next week. The plan calls for the satellite to be launched in 2014, the year when Brazil will be hosting the next Fifa's World Cup.
While the country's Armed Forces are expected to be the main beneficiaries of the telecommunications satellite, other projected uses include providing additional bandwidth for air traffic control and opening up some transponders for commercial services, which would be managed by Brazil's former incumbent Telebrás.
