Arise Networks launches in Europe
February 7, 2013 07.35 Europe/London By Robert Briel

Nigerian broadcaster Arise Networks has launched two channels aimed at an audience in Europe, Arise News HD and Arise 360.

Arise Networks was founded by Nigerian publisher Nduka Obaigbena, publisher of This Day Newspaper and Arise Magazine.

Arise News has news centres in London, New York, Lagos and Johannesburg and across international news bureaux in Washington DC, Dakar, Nairobi, Dubai, Rio de Janeiro, Beijing, New Delhi and Los Angeles.

“We are a global media network reflecting the experiences of under-served communities, championing the voices of the African diaspora across all continents and engaging citizens of the world,” reads the mission statement of the new broadcaster.

Arise News has already started broadcasting from the 28.2 degrees East position as a free-to-air HD channel leasing capacity on Eutelsat to reach the UK market, while Arise 360 is scheduled to begin broadcasting later this year. The channel will be entertainment-based with fashion, music sport and pay per view films.

Interestingly, the Nigerian broadcast industry regulator, the National Broadcasting Commission, said Arise TV had not been licensed to operate within Nigeria’s borders.

“Arise News has not applied to the commission for a broadcast licence and does not have a licence to operate in Nigeria’s territory,” NBC Director-General Yomi Bolarinwa, said in the statement.
