Albanian TV station seized

June 10, 2015 07.26 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

The Albanian authorities have confiscated a TV station owned by the Italian businessman Francesco Beccheti following a long investigation into money laundering.

Balkan Insight reports that a court in Tirana has also ordered the arrest of Beccheti, who is on the run.

Beccheti held a 60% stake in AgonSet (Agon Channel), a TV station based in Tirana. It was launched in 2013 at a cost of over €40 million, with plans to make it the most successful broadcaster in Albania and a low-cost producer for the Italian TV market.

A former general prosecutor, invited onto Agon Channel, denounced its seizure as illegal.

Beccheti has also had other assets in Albania confiscated.

Interestingly, he is the owner of the East London football team Leyton Orient, which he acquired in July 204.
