January 6, 2017 11.01 Europe/London By Julian Clover

159,000 new pay-TV subscribers were added in Portugal in the 12 months to September 30, 2016.

Regulator Anacom reports there were 3.6 million subscribers at the end of the third quarter. The growth can be attributed to the popularity of IPTV distribution over fibre-optic that drew in an additional 220,000 subscribers over the period.

However, cable remains the principal platform for subscription TV, representing 36.8% of total subscribers.

NOS, at 43.5% holds the largest percentage of subscribers, followed by MEO (39.4%), Vodafone (12.2%) and Cabovisão (4.7%). In net terms, Vodafone was the provider that added the largest number of subscribers in the 3rd quarter.

About 16.2% of homes took a premium channel, while 78.7% had more than 80 channels (an increase of 6.7 percentage points year-on-year).

In the 3rd quarter, about 3.2% of individuals aged 10 years or over subscribed to streaming-on-demand services (Netflix, Fox Play and Nplay).

Total revenues from subscription TV distribution services were reported at €1.342 billion, an increase of 8.6% on the same period of 2015.
