Palestinian journalists praise decision to reopen radio stations

The Palestinian Journalist Syndicate (PJS) has praised the Palestinian Authority Ministry of Telecommunications decision to reopen all local stations forced to shut down over frequency and licensing disputes. The reopening will continue until 15 April, to provide stations with the opportunity to arrange for licensing fees and to broadcast on their own frequency, the PJS said.

On Tuesday, Minister of Telecommunications Mashhour Abu Daka met with PJS head, Abed An-Nasser An-Najjar, where it was agreed that the stations would be reopened. Abu Daka said that radio stations which interfere with other frequencies are required to install the appropriate filters “urgently, so that the ministry will not be obliged to close them down again, under pressure from other stations.” Such filters must be installed after stations settle their frequency and licensing permits. “This is of great importance so that stalled stations can emerge and become able to convey their message through media to the largest number of residents possible,” the minister said.

An-Najjar called on station owners to finalize the necessary permits swiftly, at the PA Ministries of Interior, Information and Telecommunications. “Station owners must take advantage of the period afforded by the ministry so that they will not be forced to stop broadcasting because of frequencies or failing to get the required licence.” Both praised the positive role of radio media in the occupied Palestinian territories, describing them as “good investments” in the field.

In February, nine radio and TV stations in Nablus halted broadcasts, protesting the PA’s decision to shut down their operations within 48 hours for failure to pay a number of fees. In March, A Ramallah station was shut down due to overlapping frequencies. Station owners said they had called President Mahmoud Abbas to urge him to personally intervene in the matter.
