Tata promises Gulf telecommunications 'revolution'

A new underwater telecommunications cable designed to improve services offered by key operators in the GCC region is set for completion in 2011, it was announced on Tuesday.
Indian telecoms services firm Tata Communications last year signed agreements with Bahrain Internet Exchange, Nawras of Oman, Qatar Telecom, Mobily of Saudi Arabia and the UAE's Etisalat to build the TGN Gulf project.
Tata said that Tyco Telecommunications had been chosen to construct the TGN Gulf cable system.
Tata said the cable was part of its $200m commitment to the Middle East for the development of its telecom operations over the next two years.
Vinod Kumar, president and COO of Tata Communications, said: "We firmly believe in the growth potential and increasing dynamism in the Middle East.
"This conviction translates tangibly into investments that will increase our infrastructure and services coverage throughout the region."
The new cable system, which was announced in October 2009 and is set for completion next year, will connect the region to the rest of the world via the Tata Global Network (TGN).
The total length of the cable system within the Gulf region will stretch some 4,469 kilometres, stretching from Mumbai through to Oman and onto Kuwait.
The company said it would provide "a new dimension to the infrastructure and unique service capabilities of each of the partners".
Each operator will have access to a new high-speed route to the globe and at the same time add resilience and diversity to the infrastructure in each country, Tata added in a statement.
