Police were alerted to the lorry swerving across the northbound carriageway of the A12 near Mountnessing, reports the Daily Telegraph.
The driver failed to respond to the flashing lights and sirens and police realised he had fallen ill at the wheel.
The lorry drove off the A12 near Galleywood, before swinging around a roundabout and making its way back down the slip road to rejoin the A12.
Sergeant Stewart Gason gave chase, running alongside the lorry until he was level with the cab.
He managed to jump inside and slam on the brakes just before the lorry rejoined the carriageway.
Ambulance crews then took the lorry driver to the nearby Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford, where he was treated for a suspected stroke.
Sgt Gason said: "We must thank the motorist who first contacted us to alert us to this situation. The lorry driver became severely ill at the wheel and could have caused a nasty crash which could have had tragic consequences.
"It was swerving across the carriageway and travelling at random speeds so it's a good thing we got there in time."
