Having a lovely day at the seaside are these women wearing body suits and protective head masks, dubbed "face-kinis".
A NEW craze is sweeping beachgoers in China concerned about the harmful effects of the skin.
Full bodysuits, known as "face-kinis", which totally covers the wearer's head are proving popular on beaches in China's north-east.

Men and women are appearing on nearly every beach in Qingdao, in eastern China's Shandong province, in bodysuits where only the mouth and nose is exposed.

Face-kinis have also brought instant fame to their wearers on the internet, according to CRI online, a web version of the state-run broadcaster China Radio International.

The beaches begin to fill up from 6am as the beaches become dotted with colorful face-kinis in black, red, orange and blue stripes and patterned designs. Local press reported that when the swimmers resurface the scene looks from a science-fiction movie.

"The weather is too hot, the first thing I do each day is to swim in the sea," said 62-year-old Zhang Guilan, a native of Qingdao with a special affection for the sea.

Zhang said the body suits were invented several years ago and had recently caught on Guilan recalled. She thought this invention came from the native wisdom of Qingdao citizens.

Unlike many white western sunbathers, many people in China dislike getting a tan, especially on the face. They feel that dark skin, reminiscent of farmers and laborers who toil in the sun, is not as pretty as dainty white skin.

Shops on beaches are selling this special swimwear at 15 to 25 yuan (25 to 40 cents).
