German court convicts Sky streaming pirates

November 24, 2016 11.10 Europe/London By Jörn Krieger

The district court of German town Tauberbischofsheim has convicted two Germans for illegal live-streaming of Bundesliga coverage from pay-TV broadcaster Sky Deutschland.

On grounds of five proven copyright violations in 2014, a 28-year old man from federal state Baden-Württemberg was sentenced to a 1-year prison sentence on probation. The other person, a 28-year old man from Saxony, was sentenced to a fine.

Sky Deutschland was able to clearly identify the offenders through its own investigations when submitting the complaint, enabling quick detection by the police.

“This clear verdict of the district court of Tauberbischofsheim reaffirms our strategy of consistently and forcefully tracking down illegal live-streams,” said Thomas Stahn, head of anti-piracy & technology at Sky Deutschland. “It is an important sign that the legal authorities take action against these kinds of copyright violations and sanctions the offenders with prison sentences and severe fines.”
