Anyone Recommend a Free Video Format Converter (for either VOB, TRP or TP - to AVI or MP4)

I've tried WinAVI and another one both stopped at 78% (presumably in an attempt to get me to buy the full version).

I have files recorded from my Spiderbox (.TRP, KMP Video Files)
and XtoDVD4 successfully burnt a DVD after renaming .TRP to .TP

I need to convert the original .TRP / .TP or the .VOB's I now have to either .avi or .mp4 to reduce the file size so I can upload (MEGAUPLOAD etc) the TV show for a friend......any suggestions of a suitable Video Formats Converter Program welcome.....wasted several hours on this already and getting nowhere!!!
