The Jersey Telecom Group has outlined plans for improving its network on the Channel Island.

Jersey residents are set to get access to faster broadband speeds from next month under plans from the Jersey Telecom Group (JTG).

The company has predicted around a quarter of householders will be able to receive download speeds of between 15 and 20Mb/s from December 2010.

Since September 2006, the telecoms firm has invested £11 million in improving its Next Generation Network on the island and the company is also in the process of replacing copper infrastructure with fibre optic broadband cables.

These are capable of carrying data at far higher speeds.

Chief executive of JTG Graeme Miller described the plans as a "key milestone" in its continuing programme of network improvements.

He added: "We're not stopping there. Islanders will be hearing more and more of this type of announcement in the coming months."

Last week, the company revealed plans to deliver what it described as "the world's fastest internet" to Jersey by 2016.

It insisted work towards this goal has already begun, with businesses already being offered up to 4Gb/s speeds.
