The Department for Culture, Media and Sport questioned the effort put into the Welsh bid for the UK fibre optic broadband trial scheme.
A leaked document has revealed the Welsh Assembly Government's (WAG's) fibre optic broadband pilot bid failed to impress Whitehall officials.

The internal note from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, which was seen by the Western Mail, stated the Welsh proposal compared unfavourably with plans put forward by other parts of the UK.

Consequently, the country has missed out on the super-fast broadband project, with trial schemes instead set to be located in Cumbria, Herefordshire, North Yorkshire and the Highlands and Islands.

The leaked publication read: "[The WAG] had not put much effort into applying for a pilot - there was more text in one answer box in the Herefordshire proposal than in the entire Welsh proposal."

Despite missing out on the trial scheme, Wales may still benefit from faster broadband as a result of BT's Race to Infinity.

Under this initiative, the five UK communities that display the greatest demand for fibre optic technology will be hooked up to the telecoms giant's super-fast network.
