Man City and Stoke selected

We make Manchester City and Stoke our teams to back for glory in this season's FA Cup.

There have been five winners of the Premier League throughout the two decades of its history, and realistically we know at the start of any season there are a maximum of four sides in with a chance, writes Ben Coley.

This is reflected in the betting year-on-year, and in the current climate it's essentially 16/1 or bigger bar three. Only Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea started the season with what looked like any sort of chance, and that's precisely how things are playing out.

By its very nature, the FA Cup is an altogether more difficult competition to predict. A straight knockout, random draw format will always lend itself to upsets, so it stands to reason that betting for the FA Cup should be more open than that for the Premier League.

However, the discrepancy is surely too big when we consider that in the last 17 years; only Everton and Portsmouth have managed to upset what we'd call the top-five clubs of that particular season.

So while my colleague Nick Hext - who has previous - will endeavour to find the best value outsider, I'm looking towards the head of the betting in the hope to pick out the winner.

And that search ends with Manchester City, who look every inch worthy favourites.

For starters, City have every incentive to take this competition seriously. Last year they suffered third-round elimination at the hands of fierce rivals United and they'll want to put that to bed, while having been knocked out of the Champions League every bit of potential silverware surely has to be considered important.

Their recent record in the FA Cup confirms my suspicion that City's aim in this new era is to win as much as they can as quickly as they can - they won the trophy in 2011 and were unfortunate to both be paired with and lose to United last term.

This time around lady luck has been much kinder, and City should have all the tools required to beat Watford and progress to the fourth round.

And, crucially, their task could've been made even easier by the time that draw is made. Chelsea - whose record in the competition is worthy of the utmost respect - face a potentially tricky trip to Southampton while United travel to West Ham. Co-fourth favourites Arsenal won't be looking forward to a trip to Swansea, and the betting could have a very different look to it come Monday morning.

Of course, all of these sides could quite obviously progress but Arsenal's trophy drought makes them easy to oppose anyway, while somewhat surprisingly United haven't reached the final of this competition since 2007 and haven't won it since 2004.

Even more remarkably, Tottenham haven't made the FA Cup final in over 20 years and while history can't be used as a definitive guide to a side's chances, I just wonder whether their crucial top-four battle will be prioritised, especially given a squad which lacks a little depth.

Quite simply, City and Chelsea look by far the most likely winners of the FA Cup and with the latter having a tricky third-round tie ahead of them, I'm inclined to back City.

I'll be very surprised if they're not considerably shorter after the third round and although we'd like some luck with the draw, it's clear that City need only really fear two sides and they could both be gone early on.

It's all a little bit of history repeating for our value selection, writes Nick Hext.

Stoke, lost 1-0 to Manchester City in the 2011 final but Betting Zone followers were already quids in after the Potters were tipped up each-way at 66/1 prior to the third round.

I will show support for Tony Pulis' men again and it would certainly be good news for us if they met the Blues again at Wembley.

There is even more to like about Stoke now and they have made an impact in the competition for each of the last three seasons - reaching the quarter-finals in each of the two campaigns sandwiching their final appearance.

Crystal Palace are the opponents in the third round and we don't think the Championship promotion contenders will pose too much of a problem with Eagles boss Ian Holloway making clear his focus is on the league.

Pulis has spoken about his desire to qualify for the Europa League again and the FA Cup provides the best chance for the Staffordshire outfit to achieve that aim.

Stoke are currently ninth in the Premier League - five points behind fifth-placed Arsenal and 11 points clear of the relegation zone - so there are certainly no worries about them exiting the top-flight,

There is still some hope that the Britannia Stadium club can qualify for Europe through the league but that would rely on them overhauling Swansea, West Brom, Everton and Arsenal - although Chelsea winning the Capital One Cup would make sixth enough to get in.

I would fancy Everton and Arsenal to finish in the top six so the FA Cup really should be focused on by the Potters for the remainder of the campaign.

The Britannia Stadium is a fortress with Stoke the only side not to lose at home in the Premier League this season so it's safe to say that no team would fancy a trip to the Potteries.

Results on the road obviously don't provide as much to write home about but six draws from 11 away league matches prove that they are more than capable of avoiding defeat.

Joe Cole having West Ham medical

Last Updated: January 3 2013, 11:55 GMT

Liverpool midfielder Joe Cole is having a medical at West Ham ahead of his proposed return to the club where he began his career, Press Association Sport understands.

Cole has started just nine Barclays Premier League games since he swapped Chelsea for Liverpool in the summer of 2010.

The midfielder has played the majority of his games with the Reds in cup competitions and was sent out on loan to Lille last term.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers deemed the 31-year-old surplus to requirements when he took over last summer and Cole is keen to go back to Upton Park, where he began his career back in 1994.

Cole will have a medical at West Ham on Thursday and the London club hope to have him registered before midday on Friday so that he can play in Saturday's FA Cup clash against Manchester United.

West Ham will not pay a transfer fee for the England international as Liverpool are prepared to cancel his contract.

The Merseyside club would also pay him a negotiated settlement in order to get his estimated £100,000-a-week salary off the wage bill.

Harry Redknapp, who managed Cole at West Ham, was keen to bring the player to QPR., but the Londoner has instead opted to return to his boyhood club.

"I lost Joe who would have been my first signing. He probably looked here and thought 'Harry I love you but you're not going to stay up'," Redknapp said last night following his team's shock 1-0 win at Chelsea.

"I like Joe and he would have been good for me. He's West Ham and they love him there. I thought he was coming for sure but West Ham came in today."

West Ham midfielder Sebastian Lletget welcomed the club's move for Cole.

He tweeted: "Training with my man Joe Cole today, top player, looking forward to it #whufc #coyi."

FA await Mancini response

Roberto Mancini has until Friday afternoon to offer his observations about his comments regarding referee Kevin Friend following Manchester City's defeat at Sunderland on Boxing Day.

The Football Association wrote to Mancini following his claim that "maybe the referee ate too much for Christmas" after Friend missed what the City boss felt was a clear foul on Pablo Zabaleta in the build-up to Adam Johnson's winner.

Although over a week has now passed since the incident, the judicial panel granted Mancini's request for an extension due to the demands placed upon him during the packed festive period.

It is thought Mancini is facing either a warning or a fine for his reaction, although the disciplinary panel do have the option of a touchline ban should they wish.

Whilst City have made their irritation known at their manager being investigated whilst Sir Alex Ferguson escaped without punishment for his behaviour during Manchester United's win over Newcastle the same day, it has been pointed out by the FA that there are clear differences.

The main one is that as Mancini delivered his assessment after the game and Friend was not present - unlike Mike Dean, who described his own clash with Ferguson before the second half of United's 4-3 victory as 'cordial'.

In addition, whilst Mancini's comments could be viewed as an amusing aside, they have called into question Friend's competence which the FA, at the very least, feel demands clarification.

Wenger: More to Walcott than money

Last Updated: January 3 2013, 11:09 GMT

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger does not feel Theo Walcott's future will come down to a simple matter of money.

The 23-year-old will be out of contract in the summer, and has been in excellent goalscoring form for the Gunners after switching to his preferred central striker role and grabbing a hat-trick against Newcastle.

Walcott turned down one offer of a new deal - reported to be worth £75,000 a week - in the summer and has so far failed to reach an agreement as the player looks for terms closer to £100,000.

However, Wenger feels the continuing negotiations can see a positive conclusion to the saga.

Speaking at a press conference this morning ahead of Sunday's FA Cup third-round tie at Swansea, Wenger said: "We are talking. Yes [I am encouraged by the talks].

"It is very difficult to be predictable in this kind of situation, but I always said that our desire is there to do it as quickly as possible. We are ready to do it."

Wenger added: "I only speak for our side, and my side is that we want him to stay here.

"Of course I don't want to speak much more about that situation because it can be misinterpreted and I don't think he is only interested by money. I don't believe that."

Arsenal are expected to move in the transfer market during January, with reports of a £10million bid tabled for Atletico Madrid striker Adrian Lopez.

Fringe players like Morocco forward Marouane Chamakh, French centre-half Sebastien Squillaci and Swiss defender Johan Djourou - who is said to be interesting German side Hannover - are all likely to be offloaded.

Wenger, though, maintains Arsenal must concentrate on the players they have in the first team now, rather than worrying about who might be coming in or going out.

"First of all we have to make sure the players who are here stay here, after we look outside," he said.

"Let's first try to finalise with Theo Walcott and after if we need something else we will go somewhere else, but our first priority is that.

"The most important players for us are those who are here. Those who are on the transfer market will not help us win the games."

Wenger added there was "no news" on the future of Andrey Arshavin, who has been linked with both Reading and Paris St Germain, but revealed he expected some departures.

"Squillaci, if he finds a club, he will certainly go. Djourou might go somewhere as well, that will be decided in the next 48 to 72 hours," said the Arsenal manager.

Wenger expects to take a full squad to Swansea.

He said: "Everybody is available because we have [Abou] Diaby and [Andre] Santos coming back into full training. They are not completely match-fit, but they are back."

Tanto, tantissimo…

Luis Suarez booed at PFA bash

Luis Suarez's name was booed twice at the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year awards.

The PFA came under fire last week for their refusal withdraw Suarez from its Player of the Year shortlist after he bit Branislav Ivanovic during Liverpool's game against the Blues at Anfield.

PFA Team of the Year

David De Gea (Manchester United), Pablo Zabaleta (Manchester City), Jan Vertonghen (Tottenham), Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United), Leighton Baines (Everton), Michael Carrick (Manchester United), Juan Mata (Chelsea), Gareth Bale (Tottenham), Eden Hazard (Chelsea), Luis Suarez (Liverpool), Robin van Persie (Manchester United).

In a room full of fellow professionals and other guests at the Grosvenor Hotel in Mayfair, central London, where the awards were handed out, the controversial Uruguayan's name was booed on two occasions.

The first time came when he was named in the team of the year, and secondly when his name was read out on the short list for Player of the Year, in which he finished second behind Gareth Bale.

Suarez, who has scored 23 goals in the league this year, received an eight-match ban for racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra last season.

Suarez was the only Liverpool player named in the team of the year.

Premier League top scorer Robin van Persie was one of four Manchester United players to be included in the XI.

Van Persie, who moved to Old Trafford from Arsenal last summer, has scored 25 goals so far this term to help United win their 20th Barclays Premier League title.

He was joined in the Team of the Year, which is voted for by the players, by team-mates David De Gea, Rio Ferdinand and Michael Carrick.

Deposed champions Manchester City only had one member in the team - Argentinian right-back Pablo Zabaleta.

Gareth Bale, who also won the Player and Young Player of the Year awards, earned a place in the team, while his Tottenham team-mate Jan Vertonghen was named in central defence.

Chelsea duo Juan Mata and Eden Hazard were also included, as was Everton left-back Leighton Baines.

Wilfried Zaha, who will joined the Premier League champions earlier this year and was immediately loaned back to Crystal Palace, was named in the npower Championship team of the year alongside Eagles team-mates Glenn Murray and Yannick Bolasie.

There was no place in the starting XI for Blackburn's Jordan Rhodes, with Watford hitman Matej Vydra preferred up front.

Peter Whittingham and Mark Hudson were the two representatives from champions Cardiff while Blackpool's Tom Ince was also included.

Newly-promoted Doncaster had two players - David Cotterill and Rob Jones - named in the npower League One team of the year and there was also a place in the team for top scorer Patrick Madden, who has scored 23 goals this season for Yeovil.

Gillingham, who will be playing in League One next season, had three players included in the League Two team of the year - Stuart Nelson, Adam Barrett and Joseph Martin.
