Eclipse gets to nominate five exchanges for fibre upgrade

Wednesday, November 10th

Internet service provider Eclipse is asking consumers to nominate parts of the country that should get super-fast broadband access.
Eclipse Internet has been given the chance to nominate five exchanges in the UK that it feels should be upgraded to receive fibre optic broadband.

Telecoms giant BT gave Eclipse the opportunity to choose the locations itself, but the smaller broadband provider has passed on the responsibility to the public.

Consumers have been invited to log on to the Eclipse website before 17:00 GMT on Friday (November 12th 2010) to vote for their local exchange to be improved.

Director at Eclipse Clodagh Murphy welcomed the opportunity, stating she is "delighted" at BT's decision to allow it to have a say on future super-fast broadband deployment.

"Rather than us selecting five exchanges for nomination, we felt our customers and potential customers should be the ones to decide by voting," she added.

Earlier this week, Ms Murphy called for an end to the hostility between BT and Virgin Media regarding the two companies' fibre plans.

She claimed consumers are getting "sick and tired" of the spat
