BT Scotland broadband rollout on track, says spokesman

Tuesday, November 9th

More than half of Scotland will be covered by BT's next generation network by spring 2011, a spokesman has insisted.
A BT spokesman has reassured residents and businesses in Scotland that the company is on track with its broadband rollout plans north of the border.

The broadband bundle provider revealed in April 2010 that it plans to upgrade 32 exchanges across the country for "next generation access", but the Herald pointed out only four have been improved to date.

Despite the newspaper's concerns, a source from BT insisted it is still on schedule to complete the work, which is set to benefit more than 260,000 properties.

"We are on course to cover 55 per cent of Scotland's homes and businesses by next spring," the spokesman stated.

The telecoms giant is aiming to make fibre optic broadband available to two-thirds of the UK by 2015, provided investment conditions prove to be favourable.

Areas covered by the improvement work will see existing download speeds boosted to up to 40Mb/s, while the project could cost as much as £2.5 billion to complete.
