Virgin Media exec knocks BT fibre optic broadband strategy
Friday, November 5th 2010

BT should roll out fibre optic broadband in areas where the technology is not already available, it has been argued.
A Virgin Media executive has hit out at BT for failing to cover more of the country in its fibre optic broadband rollout.

Head of broadband at the cable giant Duncan Higgins told attendees at the Westminster eForum this week that BT's deployment of the technology is focusing on areas that already have access to the infrastructure courtesy of Virgin Media.

"Everywhere BT is rolling out super-fast broadband is where Virgin has already been," Mr Higgins insisted.

However, his comments elicited a strong rebuttal from BT's strategy chief Liz Garfield, who repeatedly exclaimed "not true" during the speech.

Broadband, digital TV and home phone provider BT has stated it is planning to extend fibre optic broadband to around 66 per cent of properties across the UK by 2015.

Earlier this month, the company announced the first homes in the London communities of Parsons Green, Merton Park, Mile End, Skyport and New Cross have been given access to the technology.
