Insurance market could face $192m+ Eutelsat 5 West B satellite loss
28th October 2019 - Author: Steve Evans

Satellite industry observers are discussing the potential for the EUTELSAT 5 West B geostationary satellite to become a total loss, which could cost the insurance market at least $192 million.

https://www.reinsurancene.ws/insurance-market-could-face-192m-eutelsat-5-west-b-satellite-loss/

Named EUTELSAT 5 West B, the vehicle faced a potential malfunction related to a solar array which industry insiders suggest may not have extended fully, or even at all, when the satellite reached initial orbit.

Eutelsat 7A may now move to 5 west after 7C moves to 7 east if efforts to rectify the problems with E5WestB are not successful.

Eutelsat said in a statement Thursday that it is investing an apparent solar array anomaly on spacecraft.

“An incident occurred on one of the two solar arrays on the Eutelsat 5 West B satellite, as it approached its orbital test location,” said Marie-Sophie Ecuer, a Eutelsat spokesperson. “An inquiry with Northrop Grumman to investigate the causes of the incident and assess the impact on the performance of the satellite is underway.”

https://spaceflightnow.com/2019/10/...ray-incident-on-new-communications-satellite/

Looks like E5WB has hit something a similar incident happened to Eutelsat W5 suffered in 2008 the loss of one of its solar arrays due to the array's failed drive motor, leading to a switch-off of 4 of the 24 transponders.

We may end up with 3 satellites @ 5 west E5 West A + E5 West B + another satellite.

https://space.skyrocket.de/doc_sdat/eutelsat-w.htm

So all is not lost on the Eutelsat 5 West B satellite as it has a Ku payload of 35 equivalent 36 MHz transponders,

Maybe another satellite can provide support @ 5 west there are a lot of spare empty satellites about :-

Failure of Eutelsat 5 West B to start due to damaged solar panel

Contenders for moving to 5 west in if a new satellite Eutelsat 5 West C will need to be constructed it will take 3 to 4 years,

Eutelsat 7A @ 7° East 57 Ku band Tp's Approx 26 Tp in use
7A Q2 2021 is the end of geostationary service short term,

Hotbird 13E @ 13° East with 38 Ku band Tp's only 3 in use
End of life Q4 2024 would seem to be the ideal contender as it is not needed @ 13 east now,

Hotbird 13B & 13C each have 64 transponders x 2 =128 transponders available with only 95 in use @ 13° East & 33 spare,

Eutelsat's silence is of some concern as they do not seem to be able to make a decision maybe 5 West B can be repaired but the lack of test carriers make this unlikely so looks like it is of no use @ 5 west as originally intended.

eutelsat 5 west a ,begin problems/time to time signal lost to some trannsponders for few seconds[5-10 sec] and to other signal fluctuated between 30 and 100%/if eutelsat dont make a speed movment to this location they lost this sat pozition

Eutelsat 5 West A is running low on fuel so has now become inclined.

Eutelsat 5 West A is now an inclined orbit to gain a little time for a replacement satellite to move here as 5 West B seems to be a non starter now due to solar panel damage.

The orbit of 5 West A will gradually decline more over the coming months making for unreliable reception from 5 west on the outer reaches of the footprint.

Eutelsat needs to move another satellite to 5 west,
Hotbird 13E looks like a contender to move to 5 west only 3 active transponders currently in use with 38 Ku band Tp's available & has 4 years left in geostationary orbit more than enough time to build Eutelsat 5 West C if Eutelsat 5 West B cannot be fixed.

Hotbirds 13B & 13C can cover 13 east with plenty of spare transponder capacity.

It makes me wonder if Eutelsat are still on extended leave as no positive action so far

Eutelsat 13E looks the best bet for 5 West & they had better make a move soon or they will have some very irate customers to contend with

13 east does not need 13E atm
Hotbird 13B & 13C each have 64 transponders x 2 =128 transponders available with only 95 in use @ 13° East & 33 spare,

Eutelsat 13F & 13 G will launch to 13 east in under 18 months time this will give Eutelsat some much needed breathing space.:thum:

Seems to be that some italian services in multistream are copying/moving to Eutelsat 9B @9E...
They will abandon the 5W position may be.

5 west options as Eutelsat 5 West B has failed due to a damaged solar panel,

Option 1 Eutelsat 7C starts at the end of January 2020 @ 7 east this allows Eutelsat 7A to move to 5 west,

Option 2 Eutelsat 13E moves to 5 west Eutelsat 7A moves to 13 east for extra back up as 13E only has 3 active transponders & 4 years of life in geostationary orbit with 38 available transponders,

Option 3 Eutelsat leases an empty satellite from this list FlySat Sat List for emergency cover.https://www.flysat.com/satlist.php

In the meantime Eutelsat finance & give the go ahead for the construction of 5 West C.

you are spot on this mate ...soon we can say good bye to the italian multistream service if you are outside italy they are using the italian spot beam on 9*

They just have to make sure that they launch Quantum without damaging it :D

Option 4 EUTELSAT QUANTUM 1st assignment 5 west
Launches July 2020.

Using a software-based design, EUTELSAT QUANTUM will be the first universal satellite to repeatedly adjust to business requirements and operate in any geographic region in the world.

So Eutelsat Quantum can duplicate any footprint even the Eutelsat 5 West B_Predicted_Ku-band_Transalpine beam :thum:
