Middlesbrough are giving a medical to Gary O'Neil ahead of sealing a believed £5m move for the midfielder from Premier League rivals Portsmouth.
"We've agreed a deal with Portsmouth and pretty much agreed everything with the player," Boro boss Gareth Southgate told his club's website.
"He's just in the process of having a medical at the moment and we're very hopeful it will be done.
O'Neil, 24, only signed a new five-year deal with Pompey in July 2006.
He started out as a trainee at Pompey and made his debut for the club at 16 against Barnsley.
He has been a first-team regular for the past few seasons but appears surplus to requirements.
