Motherwell have won the race to sign Leicester City midfielder Stephen Hughes and have also taken striker Lewis Grabban from Crystal Palace.

The 19-year-old Grabban has joined on loan until January.

But Hughes has signed a two-year contract, with Well having paid an undisclosed fee for the 24-year-old.

Well's Scottish Premier League rivals, Hearts, had previously made an offer for the player, while Brighton this week also confirmed their interest.

Hughes had been transfer-listed in the summer, with Leicester having accepted a £50,000 offer from Hearts.

And Brighton assistant manager Dean White revealed that the midfielder had been determined to leave, despite the departure this week of manager Martin Allen.

Hughes had made exactly 100 league and cup appearances since joining Leicester from Rangers in January 2005.

Grabban has made 11 substitute appearances for Palace, scoring once.

He was on loan to Oldham Athletic last season, failing to score in 10 appearances, only two of them being starts.
