Telefonica to offer free 4K STB

February 21, 2017 09.18 Europe/London By Robert Briel

Telefonica is to offer a free 4K STB to all its customers as well as a seven-day catch-up service.

Last September the Spanish incumbent said it would to push Ultra HD as part of its growth plan. During the next few weeks Telefonica will begin offering its customers the possibility of exchanging their existing decoders for 4K-enabled ones at no extra charge. The telco plans to offer 4k content including live sports and movies.

In addition, the operator will also offer its catch-up service Ultimos 7 Días at no extra cost to all its subscribers; until now the service was only available to its top-tier subscribers.

Telefonica’s main competitor Vodafone is already offering a 4K service. In September, TiVo announced its roll-out in Spain with the new generation of Vodafone IPTV set tops.

Meanwhile, Telefonica has agreed to sell up to a 40% stake in its telecom masts subsidiary Telxius to KKR for €1.3 billion. The deal includes a call option for 62 million Telxius shares for €790.5 million.
