Default Directory structure on new disk

I've replaced the disk in my Technomate TM-NANO Super 2 and thought that initialising it would set up a directory structure, but it doesn't. Is there a recommended directory structure on new units? And does this depend on the image? I'm running OpenATV.

I only connected it up, switched on and initialised it. I guess the initialisation only ran mkfs on it.

Mount shows:-

/dev/sda1 on /media/hdd type ext4 (rw,relatime,data=ordered)

The only directory on the partition is 'lost+found'.
Recordings are stored in the root directory of the disk.
