How do I unscramble pay channels?

Hello. I found this site because I was searching for CAM emulators. I'm new to this, but I would like to learn all I can about unscrambling pay channels. other forums Ive visited dont allow discussing this. Can I buy my own setup or do I have to use the cable co. equipment and pay for basic etc? Im just trying to learn how it all works. Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.
