on linux you can use android emulator and then whatapp

Not Linux, you can use VM in Windows to emulate Android and then use Whatsapp from there. It's not easy but that's all you can do.

Easier just to use http://web.whatsapp.com/ although your phone does need to have an active internet connection.

That's cool, I've had Chrome installed just for WhatsApp since it was launched now, but don't really need 4 browsers installed (IE, FF, Chrome and Spartan/Edge!)
