trouble with TM 5402 M3 and WD my passport external hard drive

My external hard drive causes problems with TM 5402 HD M3. When it is turned on with hard drive installed the receiver crashes and the tv program is stuck. It also fails to switch off properly and shows "save" continuously. Any recommendations gratefully received.

Save Channel list to USB .
Factory Reset , Load Channel list .
Try load Most recent update => TM5403 M3 Firmware
You can also try Formatting your external hard drive
Menu > USB/External Device > Disc Manager > Format Disc

Technomate Will not be offering any Further Support for TM5402 Receiver/s
So if using updated Firmware and you try Factory resetting and format HDD it still fails there really wont be any solution to your issues .
You may be better off seeking a newer box which is supported without the bugs for recording .

Some Hard drive require more power than others to work, if your drive is one of them the strain on the PSU can mean there is not enough power to run box and hard drive.

If @barney115 suggestions do not work use a Hard drive that is externally powered.
