CSA kicks off Personal Mobile TV

Mobile TV will become a reality in France by the end of 2008.

French TV regulator the CSA has launched its official call for bids for the allocation of 16 mobile DVB-H TV channels. There is much flexibility in both the content that channels can offer and whether they will be subscription or advertising funded but applicants must cover 30% of the population within three years of launch and 60% within six.

With the recent allotment of part of the mobile spectrum by French government, three channels will automatically go to the public service broadcaster.

The CSA will then choose among private projects for the attribution of the remaining 13 channels. The call will be closed on January 15 2008, for a commercial launch for the end of next year with major developments expected for 2009.
