There is no doubt that colors bring life to any "canvas". From the color scheme of a room, to the shade of the car, everyone has different preferences. Mobile phones are not exempted from this and mobile handset manufacturers obviously strive to produce phones that makes a positive impression on users. Samsung's latest attempt is the SGH-X510, a mobile phone that goes for the stylish look.

As Classy As Wine

While there is really nothing outstanding with the X510's clamshell phone design, its champagne color does give off a classy, cosmopolitan look. And if the champagne color is not to one's palate, users can choose from other available colors like lemon green, striking red or even coral pink (though champagne is still the more elegant color of the bunch). On handling the phone, you'll notice that Samsung has discreetly positioned its camera on the front cover of the X510. On the left side of the unit, you'll find a headphone jack, volume control buttons and an IR port. And Finally, the X510 onceals a charging port at the bottom of the unit.

A 1.77-inch UFB screen and the familiar Samsung keypad presents itself to the user on flipping open the phone. The 128 x 160 pixels display remains bright even at the lowest setting, making it easily viewable, even at night. The buttons on the keypad are well-spaced but some of them (especially the shortcut buttons) feel a little cramped. Users with chubby fingers might want to take note of this aspect.

Discreet But Effective

The list of features on the X510 include a built-in alarm clock, calendar, calculator, a to-do list, a voice memo program and a currency converter program. In short, the basics are covered and users shouldn't be complaining about the lack of functions judging by its entry-level segmentation. Facilitating rudimentary Internet usage is the phone's the WAP 1.2 support; so don't expect speedy connections. Security was also given some thought by Samsung, thanks to its proprietary uTrack feature. If the owner's SIM card is replaced, the X510 automatically sends a text message to a pre-assigned number informing that the phone has been lost.

Practically a relic compared to the cameras on other contemporary mobile phones, the 640x480 VGA camera on the X-510 is still usable in a pinch. There are even various photo effects, shooting and timer options available to complement the camera. However users may be disappointed by the lack of video recording functionality as well as the X510's limited 2.8MB onboard memory.

Final Thoughts

With its classy colors, tactile keypad, bright screen and useful features, the Samsung SGH-X510 is definitely for those who want a chic but simple handset without all the complications that come with most modern phones. Its market price of slightly over US$100 also reflects its very ordinary feature set that is redeemed by its above average appearance.
