There is no activation mate
Picons need to be in
media/hdd/picon
or
media/usb/picon
Make sure you storage device is mounted correctly and reboot after the picon download, you could always try manually installing the picons to the above locations.

when no stick or hdd is connected picons go automaticly to the flash!
but this makes no sense ,because you loose a lot of space then!
best way is like ferret said to use media/usb for that!
media/hdd is not the best oppinion, because your hdd will run when you zap then!
