13:00 The Wrong Arm of the Law (1963)

Peter Sellers stars as Pearly Gates, the manager of a West End fashion boutique: a cover for his real job as boss of a gang of inefficient villains. Angered by the arrival of a crew of Australian crooks, they join forces with Scotland Yard in an attempt to undermine the men from down under.

14:55 Cloak and Dagger (1946)

16:55 The Last Wagon (1956)

Delmer Daves' fascinating western stars Richard Widmark in one of his most underrated roles. He plays Todd, the orphaned son of white settlers bought up by Comanches. When his wife and children are killed by three brothers, he exacts appropriate revenge. Caught and charged with murder, he's sent by wagon train to face justice. But when the train is attacked by Apaches, he is the only male adult not to be killed and has to escort a rag-tag band of survivors to safety while the lawmen set off in pursuit of their quarry.

19:00 The First Wives Club (1996)

Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn and Diane Keaton star as Brenda Cushman, Elise Elliot and Annie Paradis, three women united at the funeral of a college friend. And they discover they have another thing in common - they've all been dumped by their husbands, Morty, Bill and Aaron, for a younger model. Vowing revenge, they decide to hit them where it hurts most - the pocket. Using the various skills of socialite Gunilla Garson Goldberg, Annie's lesbian daughter Chris and Mob boss Carmine Morelli, they begin to pick them off one by one.

21:00 Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997)

Jay Roach's spy movie spoof that launched a thousand bar and club phrases stars Mike Myers as the eponymous hero, back after three decades in the cryogenic deep freeze, whose lack of dress sense, sexual politics and technological expertise still won't stop him saving the world from Dr Evil.

22:45 Magnolia (1999)

Paul Thomas Anderson's ambitious, Oscar-nominated star-studded film follows the lives of a group of friends in San Fernando Valley, L.A. In the course of just one day, their lives are sometimes seen to inter-connect through friendship or family, sometimes are seen in isolation.

A film that evolved slowly in Hayao Miyazaki's imagination (at various stages it appeared in manga, then was mooted as a short in-flight film), Porco Rosso sees the filmmaker indulging his love of old planes, notably flying boats, and Italy and the Mediterranean of a bygone era. Despite its unique contrivance of having a bipedal pig (snout, floppy ears, dashing 'tash) in a world of ordinary humans, this is no whimsy. And despite it being more readily humorous and playful than his later films like Spirited Away, it's far from trite, with its themes of remorse and dismay at the rise of fascism.

Lady From Louisiana
(1941) John Wayne stars in Bernard Vorhaus' film as attorney John Reynolds whose sent to investigate the Louisiana lottery.Big budget action drama sends lawyer John Wayne to clear up corruption in New Orleans before the levee breaks. Also starring Ona Munson and Ray Middleton
John Wayne swaps his trademark chaps and Stetson for a cream suit and jauntily angled chapeau in this lusty legal drama set in 1880s New Orleans. Made by Republic Pictures in 1941, it was the studio's most expensive film to date and it needed to be. Since his breakthrough performance as The Ringo Kid in John Ford's Stagecoach (1939), The Duke's presence - both in Hollywood and on screen - had been building exponentially. In Lady From Louisiana, he's as big and charismatic as director Bernard Vorhaus's lavish vision of the 'Big Easy' itself.

Picnic
(1955) Starring William Holden and Kim Novak, this is a sweltering tale of deception, betrayal and illicit love in smalltown Kansas.William Holden and Kim Novak star in this atmospheric drama, directed by the writer of South Pacific. A charismatic drifter arrives in a small Kansas town and hones in on the local beauty queen
A massive hit on its first release in 1955, this adaptation of William Inge's Broadway play, directed by South Pacific writer Joshua Logan, smoulders rather than explodes, and that's a large part of its enduring appeal. It's a love story, it paints a poignant picture of small-town life, and in Holden and Novak it has two charismatic stars at the peak of their powers.

My House in Umbria
(2003) Richard Loncraine's film stars Maggie Smith as Emily Delahunty, a spinster of a certain age who lives in Umbria.Maggie Smith stars as a comically self-deluded romantic novelist, paying host to train explosion survivors, including Ronnie Barker and Chris Cooper, at her beautiful Italian villa
My House In Umbria With picture-postcard views of the Italian countryside and a reliably quirky central performance from Maggie Smith, this comedy drama is an experience to be wallowed in. Adapted by Hugh Whitemore from the novel by 'Felicia's Journey' author William Trevor, it oozes a love for sun-bleached foreign climes but with hints of ******* to temper the lushness.

21:00
Little Nicky
(2000) Harvey Keitel plays an ageing Satan who, after considering retirement, decides to hang on for another 10,000 years.Adam Sandler plays the son of Satan. Hell's gates have closed and his elder brothers are causing hell on earth in this gross-out comedy
Little Nicky There are two kinds of people in this world. Those who find the thought of Satan ramming a pineapple up Hitler's arse funny, and those who really, really don't. If you're the former, you'll love this movie. If you're the latter... well, let's just say you won't.

22:35
American Psycho
(2000) An extraordinary and disturbing satire that stares deep into the heart of the materialistic world of the eighties yuppie.Mary Harron ably transforms Brett Easton Ellis' disgusting satire into an amusing, broad black comedy. Stars Christian Bale as the titular nutter
American Psycho Director Mary Harron (I Shot Andy Warhol) seems to press all the right buttons for this film based on Easton Ellis's fabulous but genuinely horrifying book.

Love, work and the lack thereof are the basis for this acutely observed, micro-budget post-campus comedy
Funny Ha Ha When Douglas Coupeland wrote about Generation X at the start of the 1990s, there was a sense of his isolating not just a new demographic, but of an anthropologist stepping into unmapped territory. Since then, thanks to Richard Linklater and Kevin Smith, the archetypal slacker has become such a clownishly familiar figure in the movies that you'd think there could be nothing new to say about the weary business of working jobs you hate in the town you've outgrown while the girl you have designs upon speeds off into the distance. It's all so, like, y'know?

Rat Race
(2001) Casino magnate John Cleese pits a bunch of ordinary Joes against each other in a race to win $2m.Hollywood revisits the zany chase comedy in this frantically funny, endlessly inventive old-fashioned gag-fest. Casino magnate John Cleese pits a bunch of ordinary Joes against each other in a race to win $2m
Rat Race Yuppies, lottery dolts and corporate raiders take heart, Rat Race finally proves that greed is good - good for a laugh, that is. Director Zucker showed plenty of comic nous with Airplane! and further demonstrates his gift for broad, knowing, loony humour here. Returning to that long-neglected sub-genre, the chase comedy, he harnesses the comic talent of John Cleese, Rowan Atkinson, Whoopi Goldberg and, er, Cuba Gooding Jr to shake up a stupid, yet sophisticated, cocktail of slapstick, surrealism, gross-out and Hitler jokes.

Cattle Empire
(1958) Wronged cowboy Joel McCrea looks for revenge on a gruelling cattle drive.Wronged cowboy Joel McCrea looks for revenge on a gruelling cattle drive in this quality B-Western. Co-starring Don Heggarty and Gloria Talbot
Western veteran Joel McCrea plays John Cord, a brilliant trail boss whose tough but relaxed nature has been seriously provoked. He's spent the last five years in the slammer having been falsely accused of letting his drunken crew wreck a town after a cattle drive. Now Cord's free and it's payback time.

Crocodile Dundee II
(1988) Paul Hogan returns as Mick 'Crocodile' Dundee in John Cornell's sequel to the hit comedy original.
Further adventures of Paul Hogan's Mick 'Crocodile' Dundee, this time pursued from New York back to the Australian Outback by vengeful drug dealers
Crocodile Dundee II One of the common mistakes when making a sequel to a smash-hit film is the assumption that because people came out in droves the first time, they're all gagging to go back again. This sorry sequel to a one-joke one-off is a classic example of such optimistic (ie greedy) thinking.

21:00
An Officer and a Gentleman
(1982) Richard Gere plays Zack Mayo, a would-be navy pilot whose uptight attitude at training camp brings him to attention of drill sergeant Emil Foley.Testosterone-pumped actioner meets romantic drama in the flick that launched Richard Gere as a heartthrob hero, while making a mint at the box office
An Officer And A Gentleman As the white-uniformed trainee naval officer with a troubled past and some mean martial arts skills, Gere is in top smooching form, playing opposite Debra Winger's local girl love interest. Pouring his heart out, racing around on his motorcycle and using his fighting skills to kick some butt (all to the tune of 'Up Where We Belong'), Gere combines a hard-edged military mentality with a surprisingly soft feminine side that's just waiting to be validated by the love of a good woman.

23:20
Battle Royale
(2000) Randomly selected Japanese youngsters are sent to an island to take part in a macabre 'game': they must kill or be killed until only one is left.Bizarre and often brilliant Japanese film about a class of school children put on an island and forced to fight to the death. Features Takeshi Kitano as the ex-teacher compere
Battle Royale This is a different kind of high school movie. It does all the things other teen movies do: the Japanese teens in Battle Royale have painful crushes on each other, try to look cool and don't trust the adults. But they have also been drugged and placed on an island and told to kill each other. In this alternative Japan, social cohesion has broken down so far that the government has passed the Battle Royale Act, and, as a symbolic punishment, one school class a year has to fight down to a final winner. And if more than one person is left alive, all the survivors die (thanks to the charming device of explosive collars round their necks).

01:35
Southern Comfort
(1981) A group of National Guardsmen on a training weekend suddenly find themselves in deadly conflict with the local Cajuns.A lost platoon of National Guardsmen falls foul of a band of bloodthirsty rednecks. Action thriller starring Fred Ward, Powers Boothe and Keith Carradine, and written and directed by Walter Hill
Southern Comfort There was a time in the early 1980s when it looked as if Walter Hill might don the mantle of his mentor Sam Peckinpah. With the great man marginalised from the system (he was reduced to making genre pictures like The Osterman Weekend and music videos for Julian Lennon) and Hill having scored sizeable hits with The Warriors and The Long Riders, it seemed possible that the screenwriter of The Getaway could establish a body of work to rival the cinematic carnage of 'Bloody Sam's' CV. Of course, things didn't work out as they might and Hill would tread B-movie water for the better part of 20 years before scoring big with the spectacular TV western 'Deadwood'. That Hill failed to follow in Peckinpah's blood-spattered path seems sad when one considers the artistic success of Southern Comfort, a violent but intelligent action movie of the sort Peckinpah used to make in his sleep.

Blood On The Sun
(1945) James Cagney is an American newspaper editor stationed in Tokyo who uncovers a sinister scheme by the Japanese Prime Minister for world conquest.Mystery, intrigue and Japanese plans for world domination in this noirish thriller starring James Cagney as a tough newspaperman in pre-World War II Tokyo
Blood on the Sun is an interesting Hollywood noir made in the final year of the Second World War by the production company of James Cagney and his brother William. It's set in the late 1920s and bases its conceit on a belief in the Tanaka Memorial, a document that was supposedly the blueprint of Japan's plans to expand from Manchuria, into China and the rest of Asia, then the US, and the world. The existence of the document has never been proven, but it was generally believed to exist in the 1940s.

Destination Gobi
(1953) Richard Widmark is a US Navy Chief Petty Officer seconded to 'nanny' a group of Navy meteorologists observing weather in the desert.Richard Widmark leads a gaggle of stranded meteorologists through the treacherous Mongolian landscape in this unusual WWII adventure from director Robert Wise
Destination Gobi Few actors have done pissed off and sweaty as well as Richard Widmark. In Destination Gobi he gets to do both in spades.

A Matter Of Life And Death
(1946) Powell and Pressburger romantic fantasy, starring David Niven as the airman who cheats death because of a clerical error on the part of an angel.Originally commissioned by the wartime Ministry of Information to bolster relations between Britain and the US, Powell's compassionate and technically superb film about a pilot who cheats death has come to be regarded as a masterpiece in its own right
a_matter_of_life_and_deat h One of Powell's and Pressburger's most elegant achievements, and Powell's own favourite from his time at the production company Archer's, this is part romance, part surrealist courtroom drama.

Sean Penn has long been one of the best reasons for going to the movies. From Fast Times At Ridgemont High to Sweet And Lowdown, his list of great performances is lengthier than most actors' CVs. However, while his sophisticated work has garnered him awards at festivals such as Cannes, Berlin and Venice, it has been undervalued in his native America. It's perhaps for this reason that Penn plumped for the showy role of Sam Dawson.

21:00
Judge Dredd
(1995) Sly Stallone is The Law in the dystopian Megacity in this screen adaptation of the popular 1970s comic book. The popular, long-running British comic strip character gets the Hollywood treatment to disappointing effect in this good-looking but flawed action movie
This attempt to bring the British comic-book character (who had his origins in the late 70s and is still going strong in '2000AD') to the big screen was a disappointment.

(2003) A class of Japanese school kids is co-opted into carrying out the murderous work of the government. In Japanese with English subtitles.A class of Japanese school kids is co-opted into carrying out the murderous work of the government in the sequel to the 2000 cult hit
Suffering from problems typical to sequels, such as trying to compensate for a lack of originality by piling on bigger and louder sensations, Battle Royale II: Requiem is nonetheless a largely energetic and fascinating film. Just don't expect it to be as sharp, tight and neatly inventive as Battle Royale.

01:40
The Return
(2003) Andrei Zvyagintsev's drama sees two young teenage boys return home to find a stranger on the bed, claiming to be their longlost father. After 12 years away, the father of two boys reappears and takes them on a gruelling journey to a remote island where disaster strikes. Award-winning Russian drama by Andrei Zvyaginstev
A haunting mix of fable and psychodrama, much in the debut of Russian filmmaker Andrei Zvyaginstev feels like the retelling of an ancient myth. Visually striking, thematically bleak and constructed according to a logic all its own, on its release in Russia Zvyaginstev was hailed as a worthy successor to Tarkovsky.

A Man Betrayed
(1941) John Wayne plays Lynn Hollister, a lawyer who leaves his sleepy hometown to find out who was responsible for the murder of his best friend.John Wayne stars as a small town lawyer investigating the murder of a friend in New York City in this mystery-comedy
In your mind's eye you picture John Wayne with a big hat and a six shooter, walking tall through Monument Valley, or somesuch iconic western location, as epitomised by The Searchers. Aside from his forays into war movies (from Sands Of Iwo Jima to The Green Berets ), it's fair to say Wayne was quientessentially a star of westerns, so it's interesting to see him in roles where he's not riding the range.

Jimmy Stewart and Jean Arthur star.A family of eccentrics take on a wealthy tycoon when love strikes their respective daughter and son. Jimmy Stewart and Jean Arthur star with Frank Capra directing
Frank Capra's most successful comedies are often criticised for being too sentimental. Beneath that sugar coating however, there's often a deeper tension. More than merely championing the underdog on the path to happiness, his film's worldview can be deeply cynical, seeing the individual as a cog in the gears of big industry, a fate which only the stars (notably Jimmy Stewart) ultimately manage to escape here.

17:00
The Four Feathers
(1939) Alexander Korda's spectacular production of A E W Mason's action-adventure novel, starring John Clements.Fourth cinema adaptation of AEW Mason's popular novel set at the height of the British Empire. An early Technicolor celebration of the British stiff-upper lip and the North African landscape
After watching The Four Feathers it's no surprise to learn that its Hungarian born producer, Zoltan Korda, was so ardent an anglophile that he once refused to make a film of the novel 'The Bridge On The River Kwai' on the grounds that it showed British officers collaborating with the enemy (regardless of the circumstances).

19:20
The Brady Bunch Movie
(1995) Betty Thomas directs this comedy about one of America's favourite TV families of the 70s.Admirable parody of a 70s comedy about a large family
The Brady Bunch Movie Bereft of original ideas for movies in the mid-90s, Hollywood started mining the plots of successful TV series. Director Thomas wisely kept the Bradys firmly in the 70s (home, hair, fashion sense), but propelled them into the 90s, where they are a bunch of irrepressibly happy freakazoids, much loathed by their worldly wise, hard-drinking property developer neighbour, who wants to buy their home and sell it for a fortune.

About Schmidt
(2002) Tender, funny and poignant, a venomous tale of one man's reckoning with his own mediocrity, boasting a nuanced and restrained Jack Nicholson.Tender, funny and poignant, Alexander Payne's About Schmidt is also a venomous tale of one man's reckoning with his own mediocrity, boasting a nuanced and restrained turn from Jack Nicholson as the eponymous sixtysomething
About Schmidt Following The Pledge, this is Jack Nicholson's second film in a row that begins with his character gracing a retirement party thrown for him by colleagues. Unlike his Nevada homicide detective in Sean Penn's film, Nicholson's former insurance actuary Warren Schmidt does not veer off into madness as the story progresses; rather, after leaving his job and witnessing the death of a wife he has little affection for, the grouchy 66 year-old Nebraskan undergoes a late-life crisis.

Rush Hour 2 Before he teamed up with Owen Wilson for Shanghai Noon, Jackie Chan's assault on the US had been as successful as a Stephen Hawking-led ascent of Everest. Rumble In The Bronx, First Strike and Mr. Nice Guy, while not without their merits, were a poor imitation of Hong Kong classics like Police Story and Armour Of God. Of course, purists didn't have too many kind things to say about his Western movies, but at least they played to his strengths as both a comedian and a kick-ass king of action cinema.

The Last Mitterand
(2005) A dramatisation of the French president Francois Mitterrand's final years in office and his struggle with cancer.A dramatisation of the French president François Mitterrand's final years in office and his struggle with cancer
The Last Mitterrand At first glance it might seem that a film about the late president Mitterrand won't have much to offer anyone without an interest in late 20th century French politics. However, while it does provide an interesting take on the life, times and legacy of this most mercurial of men, there's much more to The Last Mitterrand (aka Le Promeneur Du Champ Du Mars).

Gentleman's Agreement
(1947) Gregory Peck is Philip Schuyler Green, a magazine writer who, posing as a Jew, encounters the bitter prejudice of the times.Peck is the journalist who poses as a Jew to write a series of magazine articles on anti-Semitism, only to find more prejudice running through all parts of society than he had bargained for. The ensuing melodrama, which draws Peck's family into repercussions resulting from his charade, is often overstated and while this multi-Oscar-winning film was controversial at the time of its release, it now seems overly preachy. A sometimes crude script drives its points home, the cast is excellent and it is interesting at least in as far as it illustrates Hollywood's immediate reaction to the end of the Second World War.

The One That Got Away
(1957) The exploits of German flier Franz Von Werra who was the only prisoner-of-war captured in World War II Britain to escape and get back to Germany.British-made POW escape caper with a difference. Hardy Kruger stars as a real-life German flying ace making his break for freedom from a succession of Allied camps
It's a credit to the might of the propaganda machine operating throughout and beyond the Second World War that many of us are still only vaguely aware that the Allies had their own POW camps. Perhaps the authorities missed a trick, because while our boys were burrowing to freedom like rabbits from the Nazi jails, Jerry was having no such luck. In fact only one German prisoner ever escaped from an Allied camp to return to the Fatherland. His name was Oberleutnant Franz Von Werra, and The One That Got Away is his story.

Love Story It stars a leading lady who isn't really an actress, and a leading man with a limited range. Arrogantly called Love Story, the film suggests itself as the definitive account of amour, but Arthur Hiller's romantic drama has many strikes against it. Even a beefy turn from Welsh legend Ray Milland, and the screen debut of one Tommy Lee Jones isn't enough to save it.

David Fincher has a lot to answer for. In the years since he directed Seven (1995), his dark, moody and rain-spattered take on the serial killer genre has become the definitive text, and this South Korean thriller is happy to borrow most of his visual style. It also cranks up the gore level several notches, relishing the prospect of putting audiences through a handful of truly stomach-churning sequences. These revolve around the grisly discovery of seven black plastic bags dumped on the streets of Seoul, each one containing a hacked-up male corpse with one vital body part missing.

The Sun Shines Bright
(1953) John Ford's favourite film features the same character, Judge Priest, that appeared in his eponymous 1934 film.An old judge standing for re-election finds it hard to cope with the new way of doing American politics. Ford's masterfully observed comedy of social manners rings true as the old are confronted with the new, neither side having much time for the other. His idealized view of American values may at times seem naive, but this, one of Ford's own favourite films, is beautifully crafted, and Winninger, as the judge, turns in the performance of a lifetime.

A Town Like Alice
(1956) Taut Second World War drama reflecting the experience of the generation of Australians that fought the war against the Japanese. After being captured by the Japanese, a group of women and children are forced to trek across Malaya in this classic World War II story based on the novel by Nevil Shute
For a good film, A Town Like Alice has a terrible opening. Lead character Jean Paget (McKenna), sitting stock still, face to camera, explains to her solicitor (a wooden Geoffrey Keen) that she wants to go back to Malaya "even after what happened there". She makes a clunky reference to the money she's inherited and informs him she's going to dig a well. The next cut sees her in the village (or at least a Pinewood studio recreation of a village) by a well, again standing stock still and having another stilted conversation about her plans for the future. Eventually she drifts unconvincingly into an overdubbed memory of "all that's happened since the day that changed my life, that day in Kuala Lumpur in 1942."

My Big Fat Greek Wedding Where have all the decent romantic comedies gone? Even the biggest UK hit of 2002 was about Hugh Grant's friendship with a schoolboy. Evidently audiences in the States were wondering the same thing, so when a low-budget film about an inter-ethnic relationship with no major stars (Corbett is better known from his roles in 'Northern Exposure' and 'Sex And The City') came along, word of mouth made it into the surprise hit of the summer.

Sean Vetter (Diesel) and Demetrius Hicks (Tate) are buddies since way back. LA street kids, they became cops because, as the latter says, "I was sick of complainin' " that the po-lice did nothing for their community. (1962) Ralph Richardson plays James Tyrone, a once great actor who has allowed his talent to fade while Katharine Hepburn plays his morphine-addicted wife.Lumet's justified reputation for expert, short-schedule transfers of plays to the screen began with Twelve Angry Men. This faithful adaptation of O'Neill's autobiographical masterwork needed someone of Lumet's clout to get the vast undertaking off the ground - and keep it afloat. His insurance was a magnificent cast, with Hepburn as the morphine-addicted mother and Richardson as the father, too mean with money and miserly of spirit to help his wife or sick son. Stockwell and Robards Jr do well as the offspring, against mega competition. Lumet doesn't try to open up the play, and it grips - even at 174 minutes.

Poor writing and lame direction further hamstring a film that never really needed to be made in the first place
John Cassavetes was fairly scathing about his own 1980 version of this film, admitting his motivation had more to do with economics rather than entertainment. Lumet's mysterious decision to remake it does no one any favours, least of all Sharon Stone, whose career was subsequently derailed by a major stroke.

In betraying Reuben Tishkoff (Elliott Gould), Bank has finally crossed the one man who could bring his entire empire crumbling to the ground - Danny Ocean (Clooney). As the opening of Bank's newest casino draws near, Danny and the crew set into motion a bold plan to humiliate the cocksure casino owner and forever tarnish his spotless reputation. Shrek The Third

Now, unless the reluctant would-be king can find a suitable replacement, he'll be royally screwed for the rest of his days. As if Shrek didn't have enough on his plate, Princess Fiona has another little surprise on the way. Reeling from the duties of running a kingdom and impending fatherhood, Shrek sets off on a quest to find the only other possible heir to the throne, Fiona's long-lost cousin Artie, a medieval high school outcast. While the ogre is away, his old nemesis Prince Charming rears his handsome head and returns to the kingdom of Far Far Away with redemption on his shallow little mind. Even with Donkey and the ever-so-suave Puss In Boots by their side, it's going to take an ogre-sized effort - and a whole lot of help from Fiona and her band of princesses - for Shrek and Artie to save the day and find their own "Happily Ever Afters." When Shrek married Princess Fiona, becoming the next King and Queen of Far, Far Away wasn't part of the plan. So when his father-in-law, King Harold, falls ill, it is up to Shrek to find a suitable heir or he will be forced to give up his beloved swamp for the throne. Recruiting Donkey and Puss In Boots for a new quest, Shrek sets out to bring back the rightful heir to the throne, Fiona's rebellious cousin Artie. Back in Far, Far Away, Fiona's jilted Prince Charming storms the city with an army of fairy tale villains to seize the throne. But they have a surprise in store because Fiona, together with her mother, Queen Lillian, has drafted her fellow fairy tale heroines to defend their "happily ever afters." As Shrek, Donkey and Puss work on changing Artie from a royal pain in the you-know-what into a future king, Fiona and her band of princesses must stop Prince Charming to ensure there will be a kingdom left to rule.

The Man in Grey
(1943) Classic Gainsborough costume melodrama set in the 18th century, following the fortunes of two old school friends.Mason attributed his success as the sadistic 18th-century aristocrat Lord Rohan in this melodrama to 'sheer bad temper' at the aggravation during shooting. The film made him a superstar and embarked Gainsborough Studios on a successful run of costume dramas. The story is told in flashback and recalls the loveless marriage of Rohan and Clarissa (Calvert). She takes a friend (Lockwood) into their home as a governess, only to be betrayed and eventually driven to her death. This was heady stuff and director Arliss, a writer and B-picture director went on to even bigger success with The Wicked Lady.

"I don't hate John Wayne because he's a fascist," Orson Welles once remarked. "I hate him because he talks like a baby." The Duke is on fine rusk-munching form in War Of The Wildcats, a western so bland, not even Wayne's hefty presence can elevate it above mere adequacy.

Simone 'Synthespianism' sounds like some exotic kink, but the notion of screen performances generated entirely by computer has been kicking round for a while now, taking on increasing relevance in the age of Lara Croft and the Final Fantasy movie. Andrew Niccol, who scripted The Truman Show and wrote and directed Gattaca, clearly saw an opportunity to deliver another parable rich in ideas about media manipulation and social control, and came up with an intriguing premise that riffs on the idea of the synthespian (ie the synthetic, or computer-generated, thespian).

During the 70s, actor Michael Douglas turned producer to bring us such worthy and topical melodramas as The China Syndrome and One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. So it comes as a surprise to see him return to producing with a madcap farce that has no hidden agenda beyond giving punters a rollicking good time.

Jason X The tenth instalment in the long-running Friday The 13th series throws its serial killer star into deep space. Placed in cryogenic suspension in the early 21st century (after attempts to hang, electrocute or otherwise execute him have failed), Jason (stuntman-actor Hodder, who has played the killer in the three movies) is accidentally defrosted in the year 2455, after a gang of scavengers visit "Old Earth" and take him aboard their spaceship. As soon as he has thawed, Jason stalks the crew, killing off a whole platoon of marines and generally making a nuisance of himself.

The League of Gentlemen
(1960) Jack Hawkins stars as an embittered army officer who recruits a shady bunch of ex-servicemen to help him pull off a million pound bank robbery.Ex-soldiers use their expertise in a new career - as gentlemen bank robbers. A witty, cool comedy starring a young Richard Attenborough
The League Of Gentlemen The clue is in the title: gentlemen, would-be thieves who are no ordinary crooks but officers and either their equals or their lackeys. Lt Col Hyde is the mastermind and is decidedly narked by being forced out of the military. He recruits seven dodgy, equally dissatisfied colleagues to execute a bank robbery with military precision.

The Common Touch
(1941) Geoffrey Hibbert plays an 18-year-old with a social conscience who takes control of the family's business and clashes with a corrupt manager.Teen tycoon Geoffrey Hibbert comes to the aid of the homeless in this surprisingly entertaining WWII social drama from Love On The Dole director John Baxter
Concerns about the gap between Britain's haves and have-nots are nothing new. John Baxter's noble social drama, The Common Touch, proves that. Made in 1941 (the same vintage as Love On The Dole - the director's finest work), it highlights the plight of the nation's homeless, castigates the corruption and greed endemic in big business and dreams of a socialist utopia.

17:10
Carry on Doctor
(1968) Sid James is the rogue patient, smoking under the bed sheets and smuggling in whiskey and Jim Dale the handsome but accident-prone doctor.
No, what's wanted is the original low camp that the team concocted from Rothwell's delightfully dreadful puns and double entendres. Here - in the second of four hospital-set films (Nurse, Matron, Again Doctor) - they are joined by Howerd as Francis Bigger, who fears his death is imminent. The ostensible hero is Dr Kilmore (Dale), sacked for dalliance with nurses, but as always Williams as Dr Tinkle steals the show alongside Jacques as the matron, in an alliance that borders on the surreal. The plot is irrelevant, the subplots still more so. The jokes are appalling, the direction flat. But high spirits and familiar old friends confirm it as part of a British institution.

18:55
Local Hero
(1983) Bill Forsyth's gentle, heart-warming comedy stars Peter Riegert as a Texas oil company executive who's sent to Scotland to buy up an entire village. The finest of the whimsical Scottish films whose off-beat appeal kick-started the British film industry's revival in the mid 1980s
Local Hero Riegert plays a cynical, yuppy oil-firm executive waiting to be softened up by exposure to the warmth and eccentricities of a small Scottish community. Withnail and I
(1987) The drink and drug-fuelled misadventures of two struggling actors during the last months of 1969. A true classic."We just ran out of wine. What are we gonna do about it?" Two unemployed actors go on holiday by mistake, in this classic British comedy
"Withnail And I touches a chord in people" says Ralph Brown, aka Danny the Dealer. "It makes people feel sad while making them laugh." It couldn't have been otherwise: for a so-called 'comedy', Withnail (and just about everybody connected with it) has been on the end of some of the unfunniest treatment imaginable.

Dog Altogether
Paddy Considine's short film stars Peter Mullan as Joseph, a man plagued by a self destructive rage. With his directorial debut, the short film Dog Altogether, having picked up a BAFTA, the star of Shane Meadows' Dead Man's Shoes makes the shocking revelation that he may give up acting

Dead Man's Shoes
(2004) Paddy Considine returns to find out what happened to his dim brother, who latched on to the local drugs cartel and became the butt of their cruelty.Shane Meadows returns with a dark tale of violence and retribution, starring Paddy Considine
Shane Meadows hinted at a darker side with his second feature A Room For Romeo Brass, but he gives full vent to the potentially violent impulses that lurk within all of us with this latest effort, a supremely efficient, brutal, stripped-down work of vigilante cinema.

A 1950s-set classroom drama, it follows a young boy's attempts to curry favour with the school dish
One of British TV's most enduring talents, Jack Rosenthal's credits include adaptations of Kingsley Amis' 'Lucky Jim' and the first ever episode of 'Coronation Street'. Here he fashions an endearing coming-of-age comedy-drama that's quietly moving and full of quaint detail.

Very Important Person
(1961) Lively World War II comedy, starring James Robertson Justice as a bombastic scientist who ends up in a German POW camp.An eminent navy officer is caught behind enemy lines and does everything in his power to escape. Wartime farce starring James Robertson Justice and a clutch of British comedy legends
Few could play blustering pomposity as well as James Robertson Justice. Guaranteed a place in the British cinema Hall Of Fame courtesy of his recurring role as Sir Lancelot Spratt in the Doctor series, the burly character player also lent his bushy beard and booming voice to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, John Huston's Moby Dick and The Guns Of Navarone.

Carry On Behind
(1975) Professor Roland Crump and the enthusiastically pneumatic Professor Anna Vooshka are in charge of an archaeological dig.Late entry in the long-running British comedy series set on a caravan site and starring Elke Sommer and Kenneth Williams as archaeologists unearthing Roman remains and tired double entendre
It's clear the 'Carry On' series was running out of steam when poor Kenneth Williams' key gag involves stumbling into a cess pit. The franchise, which had started in 1958 with Carry On Sergeant, was near the end of its long run here, with only two more proper features (as well as one compilation and the 1992 series resurrection/folly Carry On Columbus) to follow Carry On Behind.

The Long Ships
(1963) Enjoyable all-action adventure starring Richard Widmark and Sidney Poitier.A viking and a Moorish chieftan hunt for a giant golden bell.
The Long Ships In the 'so bad it's good' category of movies, this is pure rubbish, but thoroughly enjoyable rubbish.

(1997) Catherine McCormack, Rachel Weisz and Anna Friel are the three volunteer Land Girls who all fall for farmer's son, Steven MacKintosh.Anna Friel, Rachel Weisz and Steven Mackintosh star in this WWII drama about life and love in the Women's Land Army
This war-time drama and FilmFour production sees three girls from diverse social strata relocated to a small farm to help out while the boys are off doing their soldierly duty. One lucky lad stays behind to find all three girls quite prepared to do their bit for the war effort by lying back and thinking of England.

Oliver Twist
(2005) Roman Polanski's film of Charles Dickens' classic novel stars Barney Clark, Ben Kingsley, Jamie Forman and Leanne Rowe.Charles Dickens' tale of a Victorian orphan adapted by Roman Polanski. Oliver Twist comes to London and gets involved with a gang of pickpockets controlled by the fence Fagin, played by Ben Kingsley
Roman Polanski described his sombre adaptation of Dickens' novel as "a film made for my own children", yet he hasn't shied away from the material's inherent darkness. The spectre of death, and specifically the hangman's noose, hovers over the characters. In the early scenes, Oliver is apprenticed to undertaker Mr Sowerberry, where he sleeps in a room full of coffins. It's clear from the boy's stint at the workhouse that this Twist will be much closer in spirit to David Lean's black-and-white 1948 version than to Carol Reed's musical rendition, 1968's Oliver!

Lock Stock And Two Smoking Barrels
(1998) Four likely lads fall foul of a local gangster, and hit on a get-rich scheme to get them out of trouble. A brash, brutal Brit-flick.Cockney crime caper that sees four likely-lads running fowl of hit man Vinnie Jones. A brash, brutal Brit-flick, ripe with hip, slang-rich banter, super-stylised snap-focus trickery, and a deliriously twisted plot that literally leaves you hanging
Lock Stock And Two Smoking Barrels When it first came out, this was rapturously received by critics as a British gangster flick to rival Tarantino, although director Ritchie claimed it owed far more to The Long Good Friday. It's got the wit of Tarantino, but avoids his violent excesses and works more towards the miserablist sensibilities of a London soap opera.

(1999) Andy Hurst's enjoyable crime caper features a distinctly dark humour and plot twists to rival The Usual Suspects.Tarantino meets The Usual Suspects in this flashy but vacant thriller of a heist gone wrong, pieced together by highly questionable eye witness accounts. Skinner is the only survivor of a gang who attempted a spectacular bank robbery. She adds a particular spin to her testimony.

Sea Wife
(1957) Offbeat melodrama starring Richard Burton, Joan Collins, Basil Sydney and Cy Grant drifting on a life raft in the Indian Ocean.Four very different folk find themselves on a lifeboat following the sinking of a British cargo ship. Flashback-heavy war-time drama starring Richard Burton and Joan Collins
From starring in 'Dynasty' to cameoing in 'Footballers Wives' and banging the drum for the UK Independence Party - the embarrassments of Joan Collins's later career have masked the fact that, back in the day, she was one of Britain's biggest actresses. Just two years before headlining Sea Wife, Jackie's elder sister was summoned to Hollywood by the illustrious Howard Hawks to star in Biblical epic Land Of The Pharaohs. Sure, The Bitch and Empire Of The Ants might have dulled her luster but there's a good reason why some people still talk about Collins with something approaching reverence.

The first 'Doctor' film, 1954's Doctor In The House, was the biggest grosser of the year and helped make a household name of Dirk Bogarde, who played the suave charmer Simon Sparrow. Bogarde reprised the role three more times for sequels, in 1957, 1958 and 1963, though he avoided 1960's Doctor In Love, which instead starred Leslie Philips and Michael Craig as Drs Burke and Hare. Philips takes the lead for this sixth instalment, this time round playing one Dr Gaston Grimsdyke.

The Thirty-Nine Steps
(1959) Kenneth More stars in this, the second film adaptation of John Buchan's ripping espionage yarn. This second screen version of Buchan's classic spy adventure isn't a patch on Hitchcock's suspenseful 1935 classic. After being accused of murdering a female spy, Hannay (More) goes on the run in the Scottish highlands in the vain hope of tracking down the real villains, but, with the police closing in, time is definitely not on his side. In what is essentially a scene-by-scene remake, director Thomas keeps the action moving at a steady pace, making good use of some stunning location shots of Scotland and an exciting aerial manhunt.

Going Off Big Time
(2000) While holed up at his solicitor's house, a gangster reflects on his life of crime. Likable gangster caper. While holed up at his solicitor's house, a gangster reflects on his life of crime. Liverpudlian comedy scripted by leading man (and 'Phoenix Nights' writer) Neil Fitzmaurice, featuring Bernard Hill and Scouse stand-up Stan Boardman
One of the downsides of the box-office success of Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels was that, for a long while, Britain seemed incapable of producing anything except second-rate gangster movies like Circus, Essex Boys, and Love, Honor & Obey. Thankfully, Going Off Big Time stands apart for a number of reasons. For one thing, it's set in a city with a bona fide reputation for crime (how the makers of Circus convinced the moneymen that Brighton was a viable setting for a gangster flick remains a mystery).

The Man in Grey
(1943) Classic Gainsborough costume melodrama set in the 18th century, following the fortunes of two old school friends.Period bodice-ripper starring Margaret Lockwood and Phyllis Calvert, with James Mason in full-on cad mode as a sadistic 18th century nobleman
James Mason had been working hard in various supporting roles throughout the second half of the 1930s, but during World War II (when he was a conscientious object) he began to get lead roles. In 1942, he starred in what is considered to be the first of the Gainsborough melodramas - The Man In Grey. It made a star of Mason, who would reteam with leading lady Margaret Atwood for further Gainsborough melodramas, notably 1945's The Wicked Lady. After only a few more films he would cross the pond and become a major Hollywood star.

Fifties wife and mother Imelda Staunton moonlights from her job as a cleaner by performing illegal abortions for young women. London-set drama from Mike Leigh
Mike Leigh has dealt with heavyweight issues throughout his career - bulimia in 1990's Life Is Sweet, homelessness in 1993's Naked, mental illness in 1997's Career Girls. In his tenth feature film, Vera Drake, Leigh bases his entire story around the ethical hot potato of abortion - but rather than put it in a contemporary setting, he winds the clock back to Britain in 1950 when it was an even more contentious issue.

Carry On Doctor
(1968) Sid James is the rogue patient, smoking under the bed sheets and smuggling in whiskey and Jim Dale the handsome but accident-prone doctor.Affection for the Carry On series still burns brightly, even though the last two or three have been crass disasters and replacing iconic figures with latter-day telly stars has not worked.

Reach For The Sky Ask Mike Myers what his favourite film is and you might be surprised by his answer. A die-hard fan of British comedy in general and Peter Sellers in particular, you could be forgiven for thinking the Anglo-Canadian would plump for, say, an early Ealing offering or one of the Pink Panther pictures. But it's not the auld country's comedy the Austin Powers star craves but Reach For The Sky, the WWII biopic of Douglas Bader, the British airman who, in the immortal words of Derek Trotter, "didn't let a little thing like having no legs" stop him contesting the crucial chuckers of the Battle Of Britain.

The Spy in Black
(1939) Classic espionage thriller starring Conrad Veidt as a First World War German submarine commander-turned-spy who is sent to the Orkneys. This vivid romantic drama, set in 1917, was the first collaboration between Powell and Pressburger, who completely revised a screenplay to accommodate substantial pressure from Veidt, then contracted to Korda. Hobson's star status was confirmed by her role as the ambiguous spy Frau Tiel, who accompanies a German captain on his mission to destroy docked British warships in the Orkneys. The ingenious fictional story was echoed when shortly after the film's release, during the Second World War, a real attempt was made to do just that. The film rightly proved a major success, thanks to inspired casting, a mesmerizing atmosphere and irony in the central relationship.

The Battle of the River Plate
(1956) Quality war film directed, written and produced by acclaimed duo Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger.Quality war film directed, written and produced by acclaimed duo Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. Full of gung-ho action, but also sophisticated and even troubling

The Battle Of The River Plate Battle Of The River Plate, made only 17 years after the event, depicts one of the defining moments of the early, comparatively quiet stages of World War II. A German pocket battleship, the Graf Spee, was causing havoc amongst the British merchant navy shipping until hunted down by three inferior quality British ships. Seriously damaged in the action, the Graf Spee limped into the neutral Uruguayan harbour Montevideo, to the great excitement of the world's press. The ship's captain was faced with the choice of having the ship impounded under the rules of the Geneva convention or setting out to sea again to face what he thought (thanks to some wily propaganda) was now an ever increasing fleet of ships from the Royal Navy. He chose neither, deciding instead to sink his own battleship as soon as he left port.

The Descent Neil Marshall's 2002 debut feature film Dog Soldiers isolated a group of men in the back-country of Scotland where they fought for their lives against werewolves. His follow-up The Descent sticks to the same basic formula but inverts it somewhat -his protagonists are women, the setting is a cave system beneath the Appalachian mountains and the foes aren't werewolves - they're like a less civilised version of the orcs from The Lord Of The Rings.

Mischief Night

For those of you who didn't know, Mischief Night is a Yorkshire tradition that coincides with the Autumnal celebrations of Halloween and Guy Fawkes' Night. On 4 November every year, chaos is sanctioned as kids run riot playing pranks, somewhat akin to trick-or-treating - but without the treat option. This annual event forms the backdrop of Penny Woolcock's film.
