Piracy rates fall in Spain

| 26 April 2017

Even though piracy rates have declined in Spain for the first time in a decade, the TV and content industry is still losing out on over €23 billion per year.

According to research carried out by Gfk for the Coalición de Creadores e Industrias de Contenidos and La Liga, during 2016 4,128 million of pirate accesses were registered in Spain, 4.2% less than in 2015. Such access to pirate content led to the industry losing €23.29 billion, 3.2% less than a year before.

This is the first time piracy has fallen in Spain since stronger anti-piracy measures were implemented and more affordable and convenient distribution platforms increased their penetration.

“This situation shows that legal measures are having a positive impact, but the results are still insufficient. We need more means and more agile procedures,” said Carlota Navarrete, director, Coalición. “We have a good opportunity to reverse the past years of continued damage to the industry.”

According to the report, films (32%) and series (27%) are the most popular pirated content, while illegal accesses to sports content (10%) showed a significant drop. It’s not a coincidence that some of the latest police interventions against piracy have been related to football content.

“At La Liga, we are pleased with the results of the report, but there’s still much to do,” added Javier Gómez, corporative manager, La Liga. “Fans are becoming more aware of the negative impact piracy has on their teams.”
