Paul McCartney in Concert Fri Nov 15th 9:30pm - 10:30pm BBC-4 & Red Button

BBC Four tv As part of BBC Radio 2's In Concert series, the musician returns to BBC Maida Vale studios where he recorded 275 sessions with the Beatles between 1962 and 1965. He performs a selection of classic songs from his collection, including Eight Days a Week, Back in the USSR, Lady Madonna, Hey Jude, Band on the Run and Jet, plus other tracks from his solo career and his latest album, New.

It should have been a triumph: a national treasure singing his most crowd-pleasing song. Yet Paul McCartney's rendition of Hey Jude was a bum note in the Olympic Opening Ceremony. Out of tune and with endless hectoring of the audience (just the boys! just the girls!) it felt like unearned posturing.

This intimate gig goes some way to making up for it. A mix of Beatles and McCartney’s solo work, this avoids the fuzzy, friendly tracks John Lennon used to dismiss as “granny music”. Instead songs like Jet, Back in the USSR and Being for the Benefit of Mr Kite are given a raw electric edge. Tracks from his new album, confusingly titled New, are just as exciting.

It's a reminder of why McCartney is at the heart of British music. Plus this version of Hey Jude is a resounding success.
