Sky launches mobile service today

Sky has begun a major challenge to BT and Virgin with the launch of a dedicated mobile offer.
Launching Thursday Sky Mobile wants to capitalise on £2 billion in so-called ‘unused data’, where customers pay for mobile data they are unable to use, and are later charged in those months they go over their limit. Research conducted by Sky puts this at a monthly average of 1GB.
Stephen van Rooyen, UK and Ireland Chief Executive, said: “With Sky Mobile we’ve provided the solution, offering flexibility and great value so our customers’ unused data will be theirs to keep and they can create a plan that’s right for them, month to month. And there’s even more benefits for Sky TV customers with free UK calls and texts, plus the ability to sync with their Sky+ box.”
In November, Sky outlined four key assets of Sky Mobile

  • Roll – customers can roll over any unused data into their online ‘piggybank’ each month, to use whenever they need for up to three years
  • Mix – customers can create a plan that’s right for them, which they can change every month
  • Save – Sky TV customers don’t have to pay for UK calls or texts with any Sky Mobile data plan.
  • Sync – Sky TV customers can create their personal playlists of favourite shows, synced from their Sky box at home, to watch wherever they are.
The mobile service is an MVNO proposition carried over the O2 network/
