Latvia clamps down on piracy

June 20, 2017 10.53 Europe/London By Chris Dziadul

Latvia’s state police have so far launched seven criminal trials against illegal providers of TV services this year.

Quoting a study undertaken by Arnis Sauka, an associate professor at the Riga Higher School of Economics, Delfi and AKTR report that some 100,000 households in Latvia accessed illegal TV services in 2016.

Meanwhile, over a six-month period the state police undertook checks on 20 cable operators and four purchases of illegal systems, in addition to launching the seven criminal trials.

Since the latter began, the number of households watching illegal TV services has fallen by 18,000, while the state budget has been boosted by several million euros.

Latvia’s state police have signed a cooperation agreement with a society named “For Legal Maintenance” to fight the illegal distribution of films and TV programmes in the country.
